how did it get its name?

Naming[edit]

New Ireland was initially thought by European explorers to be part of New Britain.

In 1767 Philip Carteret found that it was separate, and named it "Nova Hibernia" (Latin for New Ireland). The first colonial administration was German, under which the island was given the name "Neu-Mecklenburg"; when Australia took control during WW1 it was renamed "New Ireland".

(Hmm, I should probably update the article with this...) Wantok 02:10, 15 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Misleading statement about Mussau[edit]

This article states that Mussau Island is the largest island of the group. This is clearly wrong as New Ireland is the largest island of the group. Did the author mean it is the largest other island, which seems unlikely as New Hanover looks bigger. I suspect the author meant it was the largest island of St. Matthias Islands? (It does mention this at the end of the sentence.)

I will do further research and see if I can change the article to make more sense tomorrow, unless the original author sees this and can make it reflect their original intentions before then? MWchat (talk) 11:46, 4 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Having reviewed the history the change was the last done by a user not logged in. I have UNDONE that change so the page now looks like it did before and is more accurate. MWchat (talk) 11:48, 4 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
