Just interested, what does "Points Margin" actually mean? Also, it'd probably be best to format the list in a table, as it is, the data doesn't line up well.

--Neeklamy P.S. Nevermind, fixed the table and linked the years myself now, will have to look up the more rececnt years though now (since 1998)

In any NASCAR series race, the Points Margin is the number of points that separates one racer from another in the Points Standings.

It has been said that if you've no idea what your multiplication tables are, but you have the Winston Cup points system memorized, you might be a redneck. Guilty. --Invictus

I think it might be nice to include some information about the car/team in the results. For example, maybe we could have the make of the car, team owner, major sponsor, number, etc. This would be a table of data. Is that useful at all? --Timc 20:21, 1 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Not only would that be of use, I agree, and will be editing as I have time. -slowpokeiv 15:05, 23 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I added sponsers. It had a cuple formating errors in it. --MicroFeet 22:32, 21 July 2005 (UTC)

NEXTEL CUP

I looked for a discussion on this but haven't found one. Is there a reason that everything that happened in NASCAR prior to 2004 is described as being NEXTEL Cup? It seems factually incorrect to say, for example, that Richard Petty won 7 NEXTEL Cup championships. aww 16:20, 15 August 2006 (UTC)

Nextel Cup is just a name. You could say the races run while the series was called "Grand National" qualify as Nextel Cup races. Mustang6172 05:42, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

I disagree with that for one thing it is different system to decide the champions and it is also revisioning the history of the sport it should be what ever it was called when he won his last championship 209.89.13.48 03:25, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

I disagree as well, I believe that you should refer to an event with the name that was accurate at the time. If a driver was a Grand National Champion or Winston Cup, then say so. That driver may have never raced after the series was rename so how would calling them a NEXTEL Cup Champion be remotely accurate? If you are using the name to apply to the series as a whole and not refering to a specific event that fell into a certain era, it is ok to use the current name. Aedyn 15:16, 27 September 2006 (UTC)
Like it or not, Richard Petty won the NEXTEL Cup 7 times. He didn't win 3 Grand National championships and 4 Winston Cups. A lot of racing series change their point systems from time to time, but they don't write up an insane list of asterisks about why one championship is any less valid than another.Mustang6172 04:34, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
And now he won the SPRINT Cup 7 times. Why should a sponsor gain credit for 50+ years of involvement when they have only been involved for 6 months?--MartinUK (talk) 22:06, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

Removed decorative logos

I removed two logos on the list of racetracks and simply decorative and not encyclopedic. We're not trying to recreate the nextel cup homepage here. The rest of the article is very very nice, and reads very well. Many wikipedia articles can become disjointed with excessive editing, but this is nice and clear. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.232.79.86 (talk) 16:43, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

sprint cup

this will soon become sprint cup, right? Jerrycobra 03:43, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

I added a statement at the begining to indicate what sprint announced on Friday about the name change Cmsmith81 00:15, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

But why have you changed the logo on this page to the Sprint Cup logo? The NEXTEL Cup series is not the Sprint Cup series until the official name change on January 1, 2008. Gop 24fan 09:26, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

racing-reference.info

I used racing-reference.info to add some of the fifties models. 67.188.172.165 21:28, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Unleaded fuel

Ive changed the info to show that NASCAR will use unleaded fuel in 2007, this can be checked at http://www.jayski.com/teams/fuel-sponsor.htm Is Jayski.com an acceptable link to add?DUBJAY04 22:02, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

Jayski has been shown to be a reliable source of information. I'd probably just get rid of the "leaded" section after Daytona. The specification section should stay current.Mustang6172 03:11, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
  • The Jayski site often contains valid information, but it also frequently contains press releases (which aren't independent or unbiased coverage), and it sometimes contains unsubstantiated rumors which are demonstrated to be false, often by the affected team or driver during the next race weekend. It's useful as a way of finding news for further investigation, but no, I would not cite it as a source for claims of a topic's notability nor for any major facts. News which you find there should be sourced from magazines or newspaper articles, if they really belong in Wikipedia at all rather than Wikinews. Barno 01:32, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

i think this article should be split into nextel cup ` winston cup and sprint cup

Fair use rationale for Image:Winston Cup Logo.png

Image:Winston Cup Logo.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

New Article Titled "Sprint Cup"

If there are no objections, I will cancel the forwarding of Sprint Cup to this page and create a new page called Sprint Cup. this will be just like there is a page for Winston Cup, to give info about that....Cmsmith81 16:05, 10 July 2007 (UTC)

Sounds good to me. BsroiaadnTalk 13:32, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
Strongly object. That's a bad idea. The Sprint Cup series is the same series as the Winston Cup Series. The only difference is the name. And if anything, the new article should be called "Sprint Cup Series".Mustang6172 19:08, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
Strongly object move until January 1st, 2008 5:01AM GMT Please do not move this page until January 1st, 2008 5:01 GMT (12:01 Eastern Time), This is when the Nextel Cup Series Officially become the Sprint Cup Series. Any moves before then would be considered Vandalism. Sawblade05 05:52, 2 August 2007 (UTC)
Suggestion...when you move this article could you please name the page Sprint Cup Series so when linking to said article people don't have to do this [[Sprint Cup|Sprint Cup Series]]...KaseyKahneFan 03:37, 16 November 2007 (UTC)

AT&T/Cingular dispute

should info be added about the AT&T/Cingular sponsorship and name change dispute going on right now? I think that it would be an interesting addition to this article. What do you guys think? 67.95.207.131 17:57, 20 August 2007 (UTC)

Race Winner/Record Tables

I am currently in the process of adding a race winner table and track record list to every Cup track. See Lowe's as an example. Please refrain from heavily editing these as I'm trying to maintain the same layout for all tracks. Phathead 23:47, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

NEXTEL Cup or Sprint Cup?

Could someone please clarify wether its NEXTEL or Sprint right now? Why does everyone need to change the articles to say Sprint right this minute. I'm pretty sure it will still officialy be the "NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series" at the awards banquet on November 30 this article should reflect that.KaseyKahneFan (talk) 06:51, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

Yes. It's still NEXTEL Cup. The change takes effect January 1, 2008. Any changes before then are vandalism. Please stop the edit war.Mustang6172 (talk) 06:58, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

What is the point on calling it Nextel at this point. It is December, Nextel does not exist anymore, an Sprint already has a logo and name announced. Nextel cup doesnt exist anymore! Requested move

I think that the page should be Moved Again to Sprint Cup Series as the page refers to the Series and not just the Sprint Cup Trophy itself. IT is also the official name of the series as of 05:01 GMT today. I hope noone objects to this. Sawblade05 (talk to me | my wiki life) 07:23, 1 January 2008 (UTC)

Since the category has had other names, and in the future it will certanly have others (unless it breaks), I suggest using "Cup Series" or "NASCAR Cup Series". --NaBUru38 (talk) 15:59, 18 August 2008 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with Image:Buick logo.jpg

The image Image:Buick logo.jpg is used in this article under a claim of fair use, but it does not have an adequate explanation for why it meets the requirements for such images when used here. In particular, for each page the image is used on, it must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for the use in this article.
  • That this article is linked to from the image description page.

The following images also have this problem:

Manufacturers Champion tables

Would someone please explain the logic in that to me? Someone wrote all the brands' names across the top row, then indicate who won the championship by rewriting it next to the appropriate year. Why not just write the winner next to the year without the table as we did so well before?Mustang6172 (talk) 05:52, 4 August 2008 (UTC)

With no objection, I acted unilaterally and changed the tables to a much more efficent table.Mustang6172 (talk) 22:24, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

And why is there is Manufacturers Champion list but no Drivers Champion list? Statalyzer (talk) 16:42, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

There's a seperate article for that. See: List of NASCAR champions#Sprint Cup.Mustang6172 (talk) 01:38, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

Daimler > Chrysler

Since DaimlerChrysler sold it's Chrysler subsidiairy in May 2007, and renamed itself Daimler, shouldn't the Chrysler records have a 'Chrysler' heading? Lustigson (talk) 08:44, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

List of tracks

Does anyone know if we could replace the subsection and table that lists all of the tracks with a map like the one here? Mustang6172 (talk) 07:22, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

I've had to learn a few new things, but I managed to make it on my own.Mustang6172 (talk) 03:44, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

"Former Confederate States"

The use of this phrase seems to be a bit outdated, what with the Civil War having been over for 145 years. Perhaps a change to "deep" "traditional South" or "Southeastern" is in order. Ttenchantr (talk) 19:34, 21 February 2010 (UTC)

  • Agreed. Changed to "The series holds strong roots in the Southeastern United States with half of its 36-race season in that region" (bolded what I replaced that phrase with). --Hammersoft (talk) 14:40, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

Introduction

I believe that the header for this article is too long and needs to be shortned. There are also many problems with it where half of it doesn't describe the topic. --Nascar1996 19:47, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

  • Not sure what you mean. Are you proposing to shorten the title of the article "Sprint Cup Series"? To what? "S.C. Series"? "SCS"? --Hammersoft (talk) 19:49, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
  • No I was talking about the introduction paragraphs. Also it does explain to the topic, but the introduction is just to large. Furthermore, sorry for confusion. --Nascar1996 19:55, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

Series Track is wrong

There is no race in Miami. The season ending race that usually determines the Sprint Cup winner is in Homestead -- 25 miles South of Miami. The map needs to be corrected. Philigator (talk) 23:06, 9 May 2010 (UTC) 5/9/10

Thanks for pointing it out. I fixed it to make it Homestead. --Nascar1996 23:31, 9 May 2010 (UTC)

I live in Miami-Dade county where the track is. The Race is in the municipality of Homestead but people generally refer to it as Homestead-Miami speedaway. Generally people will say that it is in Miami. But writing Homestead will be clear. User:Jcmdfr
