Edit 03:59, 27 May 2004 . . 204.151.5.37 removed the description of the doina as being specifically a Gypsy form. I have no idea of the facts of the case (I've never heard anyone but a Gypsy sing a doina, but I've rarely heard an ethnic Romanian sing any traditional Romanian music, unless reworkings by rock bands count.) Odd character ("`")

I notice an odd character ("`") in the names Baronu` and Catalin Arabu`. Is this deliberate? -- Jmabel | Talk 16:49, May 18, 2005 (UTC)

hi ... i am a romanian, so i would like to say a few things ... number one .. a doina is a traditional romanian style . second ... the character " ' " .. it's a romanian abreviation , that cancels the article , which is , in romanian , usually put at the end of the word giving it a certain emphasis i.e. Arabul - The Arabian ... Yupe, he is right, "`" is used to replace the accent at the first person singular: trenu`=trenul, autobuzu`=autobuzul, etc. Mihai -talk 08:46, 16 February 2006 (UTC)
Yes, but Mihai, the character the anon was using — ' — I am perfectly familiar with for this usage. My question is about the usage of "`", which I don't think is appropriate. That is, one normally writes "Arabu'", not "Arabu`", right? And I see you are using exactly the one I think is wrong. Was this deliberate? As Bogdan said, it is ' that should be used. Honestly, I don't know the rule of using ' in romanian, but I'll try asking AdiJapan about it. About the use of ` instead of ' I think it is a confusion due to the fact that ' is rearely used in Romanian, so for us both things are practicaly the same thing. Joe, the character ` (U+0060) is the "grave accent". It is never used in careful publications, except maybe above a vowel to indicate the stress in a word, but even then the acute accent ´ (U+00B4) is preferred. (Actually in Unicode the character U+0301 is used, which is the "combining acute accent", and can be placed ábóvé júśt ábóút áńý ĺéttéŕ.)

About dropping the definite article "-l", it is only a stylistic choice. As you probably know this article (and only this) is often dropped in everyday speech: A venit autobuzu'. Mi-am pierdut pixu'. Bietu' copil. and so on. In writing, this is rarely done, and only to emphasize a careless or non-educated speech, or in the case you mention, because it's "cool". When it is done, the normal apostrophe ' (U+0027) is used to mark the missing letter, in a manner similar to the English possessives: Dad's shirt, kids' toys. Depending on how carefully you edit your text you may use, just as in English, the right single quotation mark ’ (U+2019), or the straight one as above. I don't remember having seen in Romanian literature a word, whose definite article was dropped, written without any indication that a letter is missing, although in casual writing I guess it can happen.

Those usernames were obviously chosen with "coolness" in mind, and using any non-standard character makes them even cooler, so don't take it too seriously. To answer your question: Yes, that symbol seems to be deliberate, but is certainly not usual.

Interesting: so they really write their nicknames with a grave accent rather than an apostrophe? Which is to say, we should leave it that way, and those would be the correct article titles?. If we ever do get around to articles on these people (which I doubt: I haven't really seen anyone who is into manele writing, though it would be great to have one), we should probably have redirects from the versions with apostrophes. - Jmabel | Talk 20:33, 24 February 2006 (UTC)
Sorry for being so thick... I thought you were talking about Wikipedia users who chose to have acute accents in their user names. I just realized you were talking about musicians. But the whole story stands. The normal character to use is the apostrophe, and I see this is how the current version of the article is written. That is, unless those singers specifically stated that they prefer the acute accent or whatever other character, which I doubt.
I don't think anyone would actually search those names with anything else than the normal apostrophe. Just in case, we should have redirects from the names written without any symbol to mark the missing letter, that is, from Baronu and Cătălin Arabu. — AdiJapan ☎ 03:37, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Vandalism in Manele section?

I have removed an entry that listed a so called "Muie Maneliştilor" manele singer. I admit that my knowledge in this field is somewhat limited, but I strongly suspect that it was a vandalism. - Bogdantudor 19:21, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

Main article changes as of October 27th

The main article was previously 'vandalized' (see history page). When I restored the article, I also revised the text. For the record: a Taraf is a roma (gypsy) orchestra, a group of lautari (a type of musicians). They play gypsy music, although on occasion they may play adaptations of various other styles. This kind of music is not 'traditional' for Romania. The reference to active ethnic music scenes is sufficient. (Diaconu 19:46, 27 October 2006 (UTC))

While I agree with your description of the lautari, I disagree with your statement that the music they play isn't traditional Romanian music; it surely is. Of course, there are other types of traditional Romanian music as well which aren't Roma, and it's probably important to point out that not all Romanian music is Roma music. +ILike2BeAnonymous 00:11, 28 October 2006 (UTC)
I see.. My main objection to the statement in question - regarding the tarafs - is that it's misleading. It exaggerates the importance of the lautari. They're just paid musicians who play restaurants and weddings - they adapt everything from Romanian folk to Greek music and even rock. Here is my suggestion for a better edit: "Traditional Romanian folk music (sometimes performed by tarafs) remains popular, and some folk musicians have come to national (and even international) fame." Allright, I've also rephrased 2 sentences. Added reference to pop (replaced folk), since it's one of the most important styles in modern music. Folk is then mentioned as being "popular" so there was no point in listing it twice. (Diaconu 17:29, 31 October 2006 (UTC))

Muzica usoara and romante

Hello. I disagree with most of this article, it's a complete shame. I have multiple questions: who wrote it ? what are their qualifications and sources ? How can one overpass most of the great composers of light music (and not "easy music" !) like Ion Vasilescu, Gherase Dendrino, N. Kirculescu, Henry Malineanu etc ? What mix of Soviet influences ? Who chose the "representative" singers ? Where is Maria Tanase, icon of Romanian song ??? Who said jazz was "imported" by Malagamba ? Did Gica Petrescu really introduce tango into romante ? (which are in no way imaginable similar with "British music style "Easy Music") etc. etc. What is this nonsense ? Is there no musician/musicologist interested anymore in preserving this heritage ?
