Naming criteria[edit]

I am trying to understand why this article is called "Observed Trails" (the American term) when almost all of the fact in the sport is dirived from the more popular European arena of the sport - and where the sport is called "Motorcycle Trials"? Secondly, calling it "Motorcycle Trials" at least says what it is - where as the term "Observed Trails" seems to refer more at present to Bicycle Trials? Suggest this whole article is moved to "Motorcycle Trials" with a redirect, awaiting the point where "Observed Trials" could either be used for the Bicycle version of the sport - or as a disambiguation page between the two versions. IMHO, to me and everyone i know in the sport in the UK its just simply called "Trials", while the unmotorised version (a much smaller sport), is called "Bike Trials" or variations thereof. Obviously the term "Trials" causes confusion for theses outside the sport / motorcycling world as it tends to conjure up images of the legal system. I don't like the American term which this article is titled as i really don't think its the accurate title of my sport. I'm not convinced either (but not so opposed) to the term "motorcycle trials", but i may have to live with it as i doubt the wider community can accept just "trials" ... ??? I'd love to call the article "Trials" - but as an encyclopedic entry, even as an avid MCycle enthusiast, I can never envisage unfortunatly Wki calling it that! Rgds, - Trident13 18:31, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Moved - at least it's better than the old title. Rgds, - Trident13 06:31, 3 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

External Links[edit]

How many do we want to be listing? I can thinks of hundreds of trials clubs in the UK alone, even if half had websites it makes the links section unwieldy. Perhaps we should just be linking to the main sites (trials central, trials action, trials Australia, etc), manufactures, governing bodies and magazines. Pickle 13:09, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hear, hear! This list is way too long. Since I moved the list of champions to List of motorcycle trials champions, the list of external links is considerably longer than the article itself. The usual solution is to link to dmoz and list only a few critical main sites as you say. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a dmoz category for trials. Motorcycle trials manufacturers template[edit]

I've created this template

, some previous versions can be found here on my talk pages.

If i get my head around it, I'm going to conjure up some more for other motorcycling purposes Pickle 18:28, 15 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

History of Motorcycle Trials[edit]

I propose to add a section on the history of motorcycle trials, showing that it developed separately in Spain and in the UK (particularly the North of England and Scotland). In doing so, I propose to show that (in the UK at least) early trials bikes were typically based on road machines, such as the various BSA 500cc singles. Other marques such as Greeves, Villiers, AJS and Matchless also produced trials machines, the two-stroke bikes generally proving lighter and more manoeuvrable. Although I am less familiar with the Spanish history, it is worth mentioning the contribution of Ossa and Bultaco. Also, the section would cover the contribution of the Honda TL125, the TY Yamahas ( including John Shirt and Mick Andrew's MAJESTY bikes). It is proposed to cover the initial overlap with trials and enduro, with the ISDT becoming the ISDE. A history would then address the modern day, with its ultra-lightweight machines and monoshock rear suspension, and the reversion (in some instances) to lightweight four strokes. It would also cover the spread of trials to the USA and elsewhere. Any comments? Arrivisto (talk) 15:39, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In popular culture[edit]

Does anyone think the Trials (series) of video games deserves a mention here? 120.59.38.151 (talk) 08:31, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No. But I don't like games, only ever played Sonic (badly). Others might have different views. It's interesting, though, reading through the edit history, so thanks for that.--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 09:18, 4 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WTF[edit]

No one considers the spec of the bikes to be worth mentioning. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A02:8084:2163:2300:806F:5235:9989:97AB (talk) 15:01, 31 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
