A local speaks[edit]

I live in Mossel Bay. I read everywhere that Mossel Bay is the most temperate climate in the World, second only to Hawaii - and this is, apparently, according to the Guiness Book of Records or whatever.

Thing is, number 1, it was really cold last winter, which kind of makes me wonder, and number 2, I can't find any entry in the Guiness Book of Records that all these people refer to.

If I had Mr. Guiness's phone number, maybe I could ask him if it's really in his book (or he could ask one of his secretaries to find out) - but I don't.

Help ?

Anyway, never mind.

The place is very nice anyway. July is a bit cold, but not cold like England which is the last place I lived.

Most temperate climate[edit]

This section about the second mildest climate in the world is very problematic in my opinion. What exactly does "mildest climate" mean? Also, if Mossel Bay is the second mildest, how can Hawaii be the mildest, given that Hawaii's climate is radically different to Mossel Bay's? Mossel Bay has an average daily maximum of only 23.5C for the hottest month, while Hawaii says it is around 31C for the summer months.

I have looked in my Guiness book of records and can't find anything about the climate of either Mossel Bay or Hawaii. It does give a record for the Brazilian island of Fernando de Noronha (from memory something like an all time recorded low of 21C and a record high of 32C) but that would be "hot" not "mild" in most people's books. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Booshank (talkcontribs) 15:30, 8 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

    I've removed the unsubstantiated statement. RISadler (talk) 08:57, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

North facing beach[edit]

>>The town also boasts the only north-facing beach in Southern Africa.

Clifton 4th (NW) and Simonstown (NE) have more north-facing beach. The beach faces at most NE. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Uxejn (talkcontribs) 19:40, 3 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Date[edit]

The date of the first trading is given as 1488 and 1497. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.97.194.200 (talk) 14:59, 14 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Confusion[edit]

Nice work on a (major) upgrade of the page, but is most of the data for Mossel Bay, or Mossel Bay municipality?? For example the demographic information is the mossel bay municipality and should be removed. Otherwise good job :) Bezuidenhout (talk) 16:34, 24 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The description of Hartenbosch translates to English as deer and bush, which is not correct, it could be dear and bush though - hart, as in English, refers to the organ, but would have the same emotional value as saying "my heart" or "my dear". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.174.60.206 (talk) 16:41, 12 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Clean up[edit]

Please also change any links to other wikipedia pages with a double bracket , e.g. Mossel Bay, with [[]], and a name inserted. Bezuidenhout (talk) 16:36, 24 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The "new" version[edit]

The new version (retrieved 06/02/2011) is obviously written by the tourism industry. It contains too many emotive adjectives, irrelevant information and removed all non-tourism (and anti-tourism) links.

The section about the archaeology is just plain wrong, as well as the fact that the dates from Pinnacle Point are unsubstantiated/unconfirmed (as required by scientific archaeological methods).

The section about Dias neglects to mention that he shot a Qua out of spite, making Mosselbaai the first place of European oppression.

Paulus van Caerden founded the town!?

In my opinion all the references to the other suburbs should be removed, as this page is about Mosselbaai - and not The Mossel Bay Municipality (which can have its own page).

The page should be professionally edited to remove all the nonsense, or reverted to a previous version.

This seems to be the best version before the tourist guide was written: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Mossel_Bay&oldid=401826080. After that, user Iballmedia came in and changed the article---it happens to share a name with a South African marketing firm. I'm tempted to revert the page, but I wouldn't want to remove encyclopedic information added since the rewrite. Paris1127 (talk) 22:17, 14 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I am willing to help tidy it up. I have commented out some of the neighbourhoods - if they have their own page they shouldn't be here - you can follow the link in the template at the bottom of the page or add wikilinks Gbawden (talk) 13:44, 15 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Mosselbaai[edit]

If the name was given by Dutch sailors, the original pronunciation would be Mosselbaai and should be mentioned a such in the section Modern history. I made the change.

Clean up[edit]

Hi. I started a rather drastic clean up. Neigbourhoods were removed - you can find them on the Municipality page. Museums I removed as this was just too much info. A couple of main ones I moved to attractions. The government section can be shortened or removed. Archaelogy can be moved to its own section. Gbawden (talk) 08:44, 20 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
