REPLICA[edit]

Isn't this car a direct replica of BMW 700?

No, this model is maybe one of the few original soviet designs and this should be stated. Volga models look like Ford models of that time, Lada is Fiat-based, but Moskvitch 408, 412, 2138 and 2140 are all original soviet designs. Kaksisi 18:57, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The 'entirely soviet designs' weren't 'few' in number: just like their contemporaries from the West, most Soviet cars only reflected the fashion of their time and therefore looked similar to European and American models; in some cases the similarity between Soviet and Western cars was accidental. Also, there were many Western cars that looked suspiciously like their Soviet predecessors, yet it is highly unlikely that they were copied. Eriba-Marduk (talk) 07:16, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I added the frase:

Because it is true. Their design is not copied, there is no Western car to be so much the same (unlike the ZAZ 968 connection to NSU Prinz). Other Russian cars are kind of good too, but their design is either influenced by or used under license from other manufacturers (e.g. AvtoVAZ Fiat-based models). Actually, the M-408 design was kinda based on Opel Kadett A series http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Opel_Kadett_A.jpg, however, it mixed ripped-off elements of Western brands, a lot from Chevy. The 402 model, however, was an original design. Shadiac (talk) 18:55, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Also, the Mossie did not look outdated by the mid 60s as it is stated in the article - it was quite up to date when compared to other European Pininfarina-inspired cars of the time, like the Farina Austin series or the Fiat 1800. I have made some corrections, added high-resolution photos and deleted a completely odd and unnecessary mention of Top Gear and its biased 'reception' of this car. It is of no importance for an encyclopaedia what personal and preconceived opinion the hosts of a British television series have expressed about the automobile of the 1960s that is now no longer produced and cannot compete with more modern cars; it is not the reception that this car received in the past. Otherwise we would have to make references to Top Gear in all articles related to the cars they have so far 'reviewed'. Eriba-Marduk (talk) 21:15, 25 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

popular culture[edit]

I would like the re-inclusion of a small section for popular culture as the car played a prominent role in some care chases in the very popular and successful Soviet film the "diamond arm" Бриллиантовая рука. It could be argued that its inclusion in the film help popularize the car further Since then , it has achieved cult status with people collection both scale die cast models and enthusiasts doing up old cars in homage to the film.

The vintage car museum in Sochi Russia ( where the movie was partially filmed) has a full size model of the car on display and references the film in the labeling of its display
