Clean-up[edit]

I've had a go at a clean-up. It's far from adequate, but at least it's not the confusing mess it was. I've moved Abel's idiosyncratic usage down to the bottom of the article. There are three sections at the moment--Classical, early modern, modern--which can be fleshed out as appropriate.
