Name[edit]

Does anyone know why this station article is Memambetsu Station (5th letter is an "m"), and not "Memanbetsu" (5th letter is an "n")? like the town and airport article. The Japanese character pronunciation in the text says "Memanbetsu" as well, and the second character 満 is pronounced マン "mahn" , not "mahm". Don Lammers (talk) 22:48, 14 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I may have answered my own question. Going to the station Website, which shows the name in Japanese and romaji, it clearly says "Memanbetsu" in the hiragana, but "Memambetsu" in romaji. Doesn't make sense, but I guess you can't do much when that's the way it's spelled by the JNR. Don Lammers (talk) 22:56, 14 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. Good to know it's deprecated, because it's inaccurate (not that romaji can actually render things quite right anyway). Japanese does not have an "M" sound. The the only sound not followed by a vowel in "n", the last symbol in the standard rendering of hiragana or katakana. I can attest to it being in use 50 years ago, as "Memambetsu" is what's written by my parents on the backs of our photos. And from the Website that's also obviously how the station still lists itself (probably did 50 years ago too). Don Lammers (talk) 13:13, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
