This article needs improvement[edit]

Some of the sources I used when I was working on Heydar Aliyev Foundation have good material. I would also note that the excerpt currently here from Wikileaks is a very slanted subset of what was actually leaked, although of course newspapers loved to quote on the rudest bits. The Wikileaks cable spent a lot more time talking about the power and influence of her family the Pashayevs, one of the most powerful families in a country that is (they note) run by powerful families. I think that is a bit more notable than catty remarks about botox. Our article's description of her as "poorly informed" is based on the cable's description of one event in 2008, where they also note that she was knowledgeable about the work of her foundation. One source for the foundation article said she was likely to be the next president of Azerbaijan, where she is very popular and where her popularity undermines the anti-woman attitudes that have plagued many Moslem nations. Let's make this article something Wikipedia can be proud of, not a hit piece, not a PR piece, but an encyclopedia article about a powerful and ambitious public figure. This entry extensively links to the subject's personal website and in many cases it is the sole source. I am removing that content and entering it here.

In 1996, Mehriban Aliyeva founded the magazine "Azerbaijan - Heritage" published in three languages (Azerbaijani, English and Russian) in order to promote the Azerbaijani culture.[1]

She was elected President of the Azerbaijan Gymnastics Federation In 2002. Under her chairmanship, Azerbaijan Gymnastics Federation held A-category phase of the world cup competitions on rhythmic gymnastics in 2003, and in 2004, 27th World Championship in 2005, 23rd Rhythmic Gymnastics European Championships in 2007, 25th in 2009 and 30th in 2014 European Championships conducted by the International Federation of Gymnastics.[1][2]

On May 23, she attended the event organized for the winners of 4th Islamic Solidarity Games.[12]

On September 15, Mehriban Aliyeva received delegation of Japan led by Manabu Hori and discussed the relationship between Japan and Azerbaijan, cooperation in the field of oil, new PSA on joint development of “Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli” field in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea, and the possibility to collaborate in non-oil field, as tourism, agriculture, and education.[13]

Mrs. Aliyeva met bilaterally with Latvia’s former President, Vaira Vike-Freiberga on March 16,[14][15] UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Marianna Vardinoyannis on 16 March,[16][17] First Lady of the Republic of Macedonia Maya Ivanova in the framework of the Global Baku Forum 2017.[18]

After being appointed the Vice-President of Bulgaria, Iliana Iotova paid her first foreign visit to Azerbaijan and met with President Ilham Aliyev and First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva on May 5, 2017.[19][20]

Aliyeva met with the delegation of France led by Jean-Batiste Lemoyne on September 15 ahead of the inauguration of the French-Azerbaijani University’s new building.[21]

During her MP period, Mehriban Aliyeva appealed to Milli Majlis for the adoption of amnesty acts on 28 May – Republic Day. As a result, in 2007, 2009, 2013 and 2016, more than 30,000 prisoners were released from different sentences.[22][23][24]

Yes, that's right. A personal website is not a reliable source. If it were, you could basically write your own wikipedia page by creating a personal website and using it as the source for the entry. Bangabandhu (talk) 14:48, 29 July 2018 (UTC)

Part of an authoritarian regime[edit]

It's clearly pertinent to the bio of the VP of Azerbaijan that she happens to be the wife of the President who is the authoritarian leader of the country. She's part of an authoritarian regime. This is needed in particular given that the body details how she won all kinds of elections, but fails to clarify that these elections were not free and fair. Snooganssnoogans, I think that's probably true, but we still have to adhere to our policies. Per WP:BLPREMOVE, I removed the "authoritarian" label from her lead as it is not mentioned anywhere in the article body or sourced at all. I would welcome the addition of a well-sourced section on her administration's rights violations. ― Tartan357 Talk 02:36, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
