The Matterhorn is famous for its banner cloud. Anyone have a picture of it? Williamborg 05:07, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

As an external example of the sort of thing that Williamborg is looking for, see this picture. -- Solipsist 07:40, 23 June 2006 (UTC)
Lovely example. Now we need one we can post on the Wikipedia. Thanks - Williamborg 13:33, 23 June 2006 (UTC)

Riffelsee

The gallery has some pics of Matterhorn reflected in the Riffelsee. What is Riffelsee - a lake or a river ? Couldn't find an article on it. Jay 08:22, 6 November 2006 (UTC)

A small lake, "See" being German for lake (cognate of English "sea"). Don't know that Riffelsee is itself articleworthy, probably best just to add "lake" in the caption. Stan 14:10, 6 November 2006 (UTC)
Thanks! Did that. Jay 01:42, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

"Scramble"

It is dangerously misleading to describe the ascent of the Matyterhorn's Hornli Ridge as a "scramble." It is a long climb on a high mountain with unstable rock and variable snow conditions. To climb it without guides needs both technical skill and general mountaineering competence, as well as fitness. It is a great experience for those competent to undertake it, but a death trap for others. User:BRENDAN JACKSON

A downside of the mountain infobox, which rates only technical difficulty. Anybody have any ideas about best way to fix? Stan 15:17, 8 January 2007 (UTC)
Fixed. Ericoides 13:29, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Gallery

I have mixed feelings about removing the gallery. Commons structure is evolving, and one can't really count on it always having a reader-friendly gallery with English-language captions. So there's some advantage to having a gallery here that includes worthwhile images (read: not every 10 degrees of rotation) that are not already in the article. Stan 06:02, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

Cultural and historical significance

I've moved the text below (by 198.179.142.6 from 15 February 2007)

'For the Swiss the Matterhorn is a symbol of her proud heritage. To those outside Switzerland the mountain is the wall which separates. To those in Switzerland it is the guard post which guards Switzerland against incursions. There are a variety of stories and legends associated with the mountain (elaborate).'

to this page from the main article as it is vague, unreferenced, slightly inaccurate and not encyclopedic. It is, however, an aspect of the Matterhorn that is worth pursuing. Ericoides 07:11, 16 February 2007 (UTC)

Cultural references

Do we really need this section the only part that seems worthy of inclusion is the Disney ride and that could be covered in it's own section. Sections like this are one of the major downfalls of WP.

Geology?

I have been surprised not to see here any geological references as to what the mountain is. Mountolive 04:15, 15 November 2006 (UTC)

Me, too. It would be interesting to have a section in the article about its formation and geological history. 206.53.197.12 (talk) 14:59, 29 March 2008 (UTC)

Image

I have a nice image of the Matterhorn which I have just uploaded, it could however do with a quick crop but it may be article worthy when that is done. Bfp (talk) 23:49, 4 May 2007 (UTC)

Nice picture with a good reflection. Let me play around with cropping it. Alyeska (talk) 23:25, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

Creationism Geology

There is a movement among creationists to claim that inverted geological layering on the Matterhorn disproves conventional stratigraphic dating techniques and the use of index fossils (e.g. Ian T. Taylor [1] . I thought there would be some redress of this here or a controversial back-and-forth but nothing from either side. Atom box (talk) 15:52, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

It is not really worth engaging with creationism, it only encourages them; I don't try challenging the unicorn in my garden to a duel. Ericoides (talk) 08:15, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

No pictures South face

It could be opportune to insert also images of Matterhorn/Cervino even from the Italian face, maybe with the town of Cervinia.

Difficulties over rated

The Ridge Difficulties are over-rated. The Hornligrat is rated AD by the British Alpine Club in 'Valais Alps West'/ISBN: 0-900523-61-1 (And, if memory serves, AD- in the SAC Clubfuhrer, but this has been replaced this year by the SAC Alpinfuhrer VS 3, which I haven't yet seen). The Furggengrat is certain over-rated: UK Alpine Club (again, in Valais Alps West) rates it D-/D (not TD! The "Direct" finish is indeed TD, but that is not the standard route for this ridge). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.187.45.187 (talk) 22:36, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Most familiar?

How is it the "most familiar" mountain in the European Alps? I think it's obvious that Mont Blanc is far more widely known.

Very few people outside Europe have heard of Mont Blanc, except perhaps as a brand of pen :-) , but I could show a pic of the Matterhorn to random people on the street of a different continent and they would recognize it. It would be cool to have a specific source to quote for familiarity, if such exists. Stan 01:17, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
The contours are strikingly like those of an Alpine Hat - which is really fitting, of course. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.254.151.33 (talk) 12:28, 4 March 2013 (UTC)

Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow?

When I click on the "Man on the Silver Mountain" link in the Filmography section I get taken to "Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow"

Why is that happening? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.149.77.25 (talk) 21:50, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

Are you sure its not just a bogus link. A quick google search for "Man on the Silver Mountain 1945 film" came up with nothing. I mean the link is working fine, it's just not supposed to be in this article. I'm gonna remove it now ok? --RacerX11 Talk to meStalk me 21:57, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

Toblerone chocolate has the Matterhorn on it

As every European knows, and the Wikipedia article on Toblerone confirms it, the Matterhorn is pictured on the Swiss chocolate Toblerone, but even more! The chocolate pieces are shaped exactly like the Matterhorn! Someone should add this to the Trivia section. 93.219.173.68 (talk) 20:27, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

Trivia sections are discouraged by the manual of style. Nevertheless I added a bit about the Cardinaux poster of the 1920s (you will see it in the last paragraph). ZachG (Talk) 16:46, 14 March 2014 (UTC)

Matter • Horn

Article says

The mountain derives its name from the German word 'matt' (meaning valley or meadow) and the characteristic horn shape of its peak.

Actually, many mountains in Switzerland have their name ending in "horn" which simply means "peak", as explained by the very article cited as reference. So this is not due to the "characteristic" shape of its peak.

I've changed the text to lude the meaning of 'horn'. Orpheus82 05:27, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
The valley at the base of the Matterhorn on the Zermatt side is the Mattertal. I thought tal was valley, but this may be Swiss German (Schwyzer Deustch). Just as there are many horns (Weisshorn, Wetterhorn), there are also many other tals. 143.232.210.38 (talk) 23:19, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

I'm expanding (here) the discussion of the Name to encourage a better written section in the article. The entire first paragraph under Naming is oddly written / constructed, perhaps being a poor (computer?) translation. Does one really decompose words -- dissect and deconstruct are more common terms. Some phrasing is peculiar or careless: for example, the reference to "our Matte" -- is too casual. ("... the second word means "horn, peak", whereas the first is our Matte in the genitive case, meaning possession ...")

I don't know how best to preserve the intent of the writer, believe it is best to rewrite the "Naming" first paragraph from the beginning. GeeBee60 (talk) 02:37, 6 June 2016 (UTC)

Pop culture and cinema
