Mariah is a female given name of Middle Eastern ancestry. It is thought to be a variation of the name Maria, which is a Western World version of the ancient Hebrew name Miriam. This name may also be related to the Hebrew place name Moriah. Although "Mariah" and "Maria" differ by one letter, the proper pronunciation of the former is "mah-RYE-ah." It is a Gaelic variant of Mary, meaning beloved, loved, or star of the sea. It can also mean bitter. -- Prima facie, that looks like a contradiction to me. Earliest usage of Mariah[edit]

I went ahead and edited the article, fixing up certain parts of it, but I decided to keep the part that mentioned that Mariah was used in Great Britain since the 1500s. It's just a spelling variant. People spelled words in any old way in the 1500s. The spelling was completely unnotable before 1990, but it is a somewhat notable variant of Maria now. --dab (𒁳) 12:10, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
