Steroid use

Its been reported that Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer and Top Rank Chief Bob Arum are trying to work out a Super fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. Mayweather has asked Pacquiao to undergo a random blood and Urine testing up until the fight day, because rumors speculating from professional boxers including Andre Berto, Paul Malignaggi, Nate Campbell, kermit Cintron and Ricky Hatton of Pacquiao's jump through seven weight classes. Pacquiao said he will undergo blood and urine testing up until 14 days before the fight, Stating that by giving blood too close to the fight day will weaken him. United States Anti-Doping Agency chief executive officer Travis Tygart said that athlete's tested within a 14 day window prior to a big match or tournament can still cheat, and get away if they are on Performance-enhancing drugs.[1]

Pop Culture reference

In Jay-Z's album The Blueprint 3, there's a reference to Manny Pacquiao.

The song name is "Thank You":

"on the tube I'm just watching Pacquiao box em up how would I know HBO will get a shot of us sitting so close that we almost got snot on us"

Meaning of Surname

It should be noted as a curiosity, either under the introductory paragraph or the "Popular Culture" section, that his last name is a Hispanized spelling of the Tagalog word pakyaw,[1] which means "buy large quantities."

Bit biased

This isn't very balanced. You've used pundit/3rd party evidence to dispute the Bradley result, but this was the case with all 3 Marquez fights (with most pundits saying Marquez was robbed in the first 3). And it isn't mentioned once.

In fact for the first fight, you've claimed it was only seen as controversial because of the scoring issue - when the only reason it was actually controversial is that most fans and pundits scored it clearly to Marquez.

I realize this is semi-protected, but it really needs to be semi-protected from fans trying to turn it into a tribute page, not people trying to make it historically accurate.

Cjmooney9 (talk) 16:47, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

I agree that there are some problems with neutrality in the article, but most pundits did not say Marquez was robbed in their first 3 fights. Some said that about the third fight (and that is in the article), but all three fights were close and none were unanimous decisions.
The stuff you've added about most pundits scoring the 1st and 2nd fights for Marquez is not supported by the reference you've given. It's only the three ESPN pundits and one of them scored the first fight for Pacquiao. It says "one can be certain nearly everyone has a different opinion as to how all three of the fights in the rivalry should have been scored."--Don King's hair (talk) 20:24, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

From my experience most fans thing Marquez won the third fight, but most also think Pacquiao won the first. The second was razor close. A point either way. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.231.20.116 (talk) 03:58, 23 January 2014 (UTC)

Pacquiao's religion

I'm updating Pacquiao's religion to Evangelical Christian since new reliable sources reveal that the switched religions in 2012 and since The Telegraph citation that he's a Catholic was published in 2009, making it outdated.

Here are some of the reliable sources:

  • Kalaf, Samer (December 10, 2012). "Manny Pacquiao's Mom Thinks He Lost Because He's No Longer A Catholic". Deadspin. Gawker Media. Retrieved April 14, 2014.
  • Gryboski, Michael (October 9, 2013). "Jeremy Lin Supports Boxer Manny Pacquiao's God Talk, Says He's Being Real". The Christian Post. The Christian Post Company. Retrieved April 14, 2014.
  • De Leon, Job (October 9, 2013). "Jeremy Lin Supports Boxer Manny Pacquiao's God Talk, Says He's Being Real". The Christian Post. The Christian Post Company. Retrieved April 14, 2014.
  • Samano, Simon (December 11, 2012). "Manny Pacquiao's mom blames loss on switching religion". USA Today. Gannett Company. Retrieved April 14, 2014.
  • Smith, Tim (June 6, 2012). "Boxer Manny Pacquiao amused as Timothy Bradley pulls ticket stunt for potential rematch at press conference". Daily News. New York: Daily News, L.P. Retrieved April 14, 2014.

There is a source lurking around which claimed that he returned to the Catholic faith, but the author himself wrote that it isn't validated, making it an unreliable source:

So unless there are reliable sources claiming Pacquiao is still a Roman Catholic, I'm updating his religion to Evangelical Christian. Chihciboy (talk) 13:32, 13 April 2014 (UTC)

Fair representation of his basketball career

The intro was misleading when it said he's a pro basketball player. "Misleading". I didn't say "wrong", because I know that in a certain sense the statement is true, but the statement doesn't mean what people generally think it means. People think that "is a pro basketball player" means that he was so good that he managed to steal the place of another pro player - he was so good in the amateur leagues that he got selected and offered money that was sufficient to motivate him to do this seriously. But Manny's path to getting onto the court was quite unconventional, so that statement "he's a pro player" has to be qualified by noting how much he played and how he managed to get onto the court. There's a typo in the judge scoring for Mayweather fight. "The fight went the distance and to the judges scorecard and all three scored the fight (118-110, 116-112, 116-12) in favor of Mayweather." That last judge score was 116-112, not 116-12. 71.114.169.167 (talk) 14:32, 3 May 2015 (UTC)

Issues with addition

I've reverted this as:

  • "Cheating scandal/womanizing" -> Unnecessary expansion
  • "Despite Manny's strong faith in God," -> Editorializing
  • "Mayweather vs Pacquiao Lawsuit/Excuses" -> POV
  • "All of this confusion has led many to believe that Pacquiao is a sore loser" -> Quote came from his opponent
  • "Alleged fake Injury" -> Does not require separate section. A couple sentences can be added to the current section

Professional boxing record

On the table showing Pacquiao's fighting record there is an error. Where his first Draw is the stats show as '33-2-1' rather than '33-1-1'. This should be corrected as it is misleading.

Pacquiao/Bradley3 (lineage)

Until a valid report comes out that this fight will be for the lineal welterweight title and have a reference, you have no right to just "throw around" title lineage, after a lineal champion (mayweather) vacates it can take from several months to years to crown a new Lineal champion in a division.[1]The bout will be contested for only the WBO title. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pacbradley2 (talkcontribs) 04:58, 2 February 2016 (UTC)

TBRB[2] and other sources[3][4][5][6][7][8] credited Pacquiao as the first man to win lineal championships in 5 divisions after defeating Bradley for the third time. Pacquiao is now recognized as the lineal welterweight champion. I will just be waiting for the official article of TBRB regarding the lineal title as their update is only confirmed through their official Twitter account. The clusterfuck of words

"Pacquiao is generally considered to be one of the greatest boxers of all time in the history of the sport," doesn't make any sense, whatsoever. It would make sense if it said, "Pacquiao is generally considered to be one of the greatest boxers of all time." Putting "of all time" and "in the history of the sport" together is a bad combination. Lineal welterweight champion

Besides Cyber Boxing Zone, what other sources are there for him having won the vacant lineal welterweight title in the Bradley re-rematch? Neither BoxingScene nor TBRB ranks him at all, and I'm finding it near-impossible to find any RS from April regarding the vacant lineal title being on the line. Cliff Rold at BoxingScene says:

Pacquiao and Bradley entered the bout rated as the top two welterweights by the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board and ESPN (though not Ring Magazine). With Mayweather officially retired, Pacquiao makes a strong case as the lineal successor to Mayweather at welterweight. That would make Pacquiao the first fighter in history to win history’s title in five different weight classes after capturing the lineage previously at flyweight, featherweight, Jr. lightweight, and Jr. welterweight. There will be debate on that point.

How do we handle this? Mac Dreamstate (talk) 14:02, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
