Maldivian Royal Family[edit]

Isn't the Maldivian Royal Family involved with the Maldivian Democratic Party? I have read somewhere on the Internet that some members of the Maldivian Royal Family are involved. - (Aidan Work 03:27, 11 January 2006 (UTC))[reply]

IF you are referring to http://www.maldivesroyalfamily.com, no. Aslo there are no members in maldives royal family. Its run by a single individual, Majid, and is not recognized in the maldives. --Oblivious 14:41, 11 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV issues[edit]

I think there are NPOV issues in the recently added three paragraphs and that they need to be neutralized and most of them need to be cited. I have highlighted the sentences that I think should be rephrased (in a more neutral tone) or cite a credible source if there are any.

The Maldivian Democratic Party has been accused by some of being just a front to further the goals of a few wealthy businessmen in the country. Some analysts have pointed out that this is essentially a power struggle between the ruling elite in Male' and the Adduans from the south, who for years have been neglected by the Government in the capital. As such the party has been labelled a wealthy inexperienced band of renegades who would resort to any means necessary to ensure their foothold in the next government. The exiles abroad, including those who have previously attempted to oust the Government of President Gayoom on a number of occasions, the most famous and ruthless of them being sikka , have been instrumental in propelling this movement.

The highly publicised death of Evan Naseem, a drug addict, while in state custody, and the subsequent outpouring of public outrage, provided the perfect opportunity for the exiles, who have been regrouping abroad, to strike. The MDP, as they are known, have resorted to intimidation through violence to force the Government of Gayoom to relinquish its hold on power. Their lack of professionalism and refusal to try and achieve a smooth transition of power through diplomacy and peaceful means have caused rifts to appear within the party itself. The violent tactics of MDP are largely believed to be spearheadedby Ibrahim Hussain Zaki and Munnavar, both of whom have served in the present government as cabinet level Ministers and have a track record of corruption, with strong affiliations with the wealthy businessmen of Addu. The moderates in the party have been quickly sidelined as soon as their purpose, as the common man from the streets image, expired.

The most prominent of these moderates is Ibrahim Ismail (Ibra) who was elected as the President of the Party by popular mandate. His resignation, it is claimed by many is the strongest sign that the Party is just a public show and that the real power brokers are operating from the shadows. Also worth mention as a moderate is Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Maniku, the Stanford educated Maldivian with arguably the most impressive CV for the post of Presidency. Dr.Waheed has strongly advocated a non-violent approach to political reform and is now being held by an increasing majority of learned Maldivians as being the ideal candidate for the Top job in Maldives. However the financial superiority of the elite of MDP and its highly effective propaganda machines, including the Dhivehiobserver website, have meant that Dr.Waheed needs more than just political experience to lead MDP on the path of moderation or form an independent Political Party for that matter.

Thanks. --Oblivious 21:10, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think these are the main points the writer has come up with and needs to be verified.
  • MDP is a movement to obtain power through violent means ( the occassions on which violence was used - as opposed to where people gather and shout and police disperse them - should be cited )
  • " further the goals of a few wealthy businessmen ", "real power brokers are operating from the shadows" - this needs proof.
It is fair to say that there are rifts in the party, due to the resignation of MP Ibrahim Ismail, and the causes for this should be written, citations could easily be obtained from haveeru news and minivan news. Otherwise everything else, including the power struggle between Male' and the South is baseless. -N3m6 21:46, 4 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

As someone who is from Addu, and whose family is involved in MDP at the highest level I have seen and heard first hand what the MDP is about ! There are of course those in MDP who really wish to bring good to the Maldivian people, but they lack the expertise and know how to bring that about. The remaining majority in MDP have an insatiable hatred with the old guard and their purpose is to bring down the government of Gayoom whatever the cost and however the collateral damage. These comprise mostly the Adduans, prominant among them being my family too,who feel that Adduans has been discriminated and neglected long enough(and of course some have business goals to further too).Hard Evidence for my claims is of course lacking, because most people dont realise this and much has not been written about it by journalists in Male';Citations therefore are lacking. But if your from addu you know this as-a-matter-of-factly, though many may pretend otherwise. Many argue that this is for the greater good, and maybe it is.Time will tell. -TruthCures 12:45, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

TruthCures, Unfortunately you and I knowing about a fact isn't good enough for it to be encyclopedic. It becomes a POV (Point Of View as known in wikipedia) unless backed by credible evidence and proven. Thats as per official guidelines. So we need to write this in a more neutral point and add references where applicable. I am sure references to most of the claims mentioned above, as n3m6 suggested, would be easy to find online at minivan and haveeru, with little help from google. So what do you say? --Oblivious 09:36, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Let it thus be a POV then.. Proof for my claims of the corrupt elements in MDP requires me indulging information which I cannot, and Minivan and Haveeru are of little or no use frankly.. Citations/references though lacking, what I have written is clear as daylight. My aim is not to deprecate MDP, to the contrary I mean to give voice to the unheard leaders within MDP; the real leaders. To the eternal argument, that "the end justifies the means" I am saying NO, It Does Not! I believe it is time for MDP to tone down the anti-Maumoon rhetoric and start on solutions to the countries many problems, and for that I believe it is important for people to know that those who are now at the helm of MDP dont have any idea how to bring about such favourable change Or simply dont care.. However I will admit what I have written is more suitable as a news article.. I will say no more..TruthCures 7 August (p.s kindly refrain from writing my name. Thanx)
TruthCures, I think you have mistaken the purpose of raising the NPOV issue here on the discussion page. Dont get me wrong. The purpose is neither to prove nor disprove your claims BUT to put things in a more encyclopedic manner so that they are not your claims rather they are actual facts and this will in turn produce content that is upto the standards accepted by the Wikipedia community. For instance Maumoon Abdul Gayoom is certainly not my most admired and desirable character for me. However... If you look at Gayoom's article, which was written by me, I have tried my best to keep it neutral and factual — Keeping my personal opinion about him aside. On the other hand I am not a fan of MDP either. I will most certainly revert obvious vandalism and hate comments to the article instantly without even having a discussion, though I dont support their political philosophy. Your contribution is neither vandalism nor hate comments. It just need to be neutralised a bit so that it remains unbiased. Bottom line is, its not my way or your way. Its the community way :)

It may be worthwhile considering whether this article was influenced by editors with a conflict of interest. The PR firm Hill & Knowlton - best known internationally for spreading the lie about Kuwaiti babies thrown out of incubators in order to sell the Gulf war to the US public - was hired by the notorious former Madivian government of Gayoom in order to improve its reputation and was found to manipulate wikipedia articles as reported here: [1] [2] [3] [4]. As this edit reveals, the IP 194.242.55.7 that edited the article Politics of the Maldives as well as the one about Ahmed Shafeeq Ibrahim Moosa [5] is still in use by Niallcook, according to his user page "worldwide director of marketing technology for communications firm Hill & Knowlton". Using the wiki-tool of a whois search, one can find that all IPs in the range of 194.242.55.0 - 194.242.55.255 belong to Hill & Knowlton. Although none of the IPs used for this article are in that range, there may be accounts that were used to influence this article or related ones.
