Why was this removed?[edit]

Just because it's by a notable artist doesn't make the album notable. This article is about the album, not the artist, therefore the notability of the artist is irrelevant. WP:GNG commemorative (talk) 10:34, 22 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Averting an edit war[edit]

In the spirit of being BOLD, (Wikipedia:BRD), I would like to avert an edit war by starting a discussion as to whether this page really warrants removal/redirection.

Given that there exist alternatives to deletion (Wikipedia:ATD), I propose that that page be left as its independent page so that it can be improved via editing. As Wikipedia deletion policy states, editing and discussion should be prioritized over deletion if it can improve the page. This way, the concern brought up about reliable sources can be addressed via page improvement or further discussion on this talk page.

In addition, floating the idea of requesting temporary page protection (Wikipedia:RfPP), given that the status of this page has attracted significant social media attention. Farmlandsavannahpuck (talk) 01:17, 4 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

When the article says Mitski self-released the album on January 31, 2012 as her junior year project at SUNY Purchase, my presumption is that it isn't suitable for a stand-alone article. That an album is self-released does not preclude it from having its own article on Wikipedia. Many examples of self-released debut albums indeed have their own page: e.g. Regina Spektor's first two albums 11:11 (Regina Spektor album) and Songs (Regina Spektor album), Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' debut album The Heist (album), and Tyler, the Creator's debut mixtape Bastard (Tyler, the Creator mixtape).

Per the notability guidelines on verifiable evidence (Wikipedia:NRVE), the absence of sources or citations in the article does not indicate that its subject is not notable so long as there exists the possibility such sources exist. As editors, our first priority is to improve the article by adding notability-indicating sources rather than jumping to removal or redirection.

I have taken the opportunity to do so by adding journalistic references to address the concern about reliable sources. While others are welcome to add additional sources, it is now the case that this article meets the general notability guidelines as well as the subject-specific notability guidelines for music and albums. An additional, practical consideration for keeping this page, regardless of notability:

Per the discussion on inherited notability (Wikipedia:INHERITED), it is accepted convention for an album, even if lacking notability by itself, to remain in its own separate article for the sake of navigation: "Often, a separate article is created for formatting and display purposes; however, this does not imply an "inherited notability" per se, but is often accepted in the context of ease of formatting and navigation, such as with books and albums." After all, the discography page is not a substitute for the standalone album page, as information such as the track listing and album cover would be lost.
