utter nonsense[edit]

Who on earth wrote this:

"One of the station's three water towers has been positioned on one of the platforms to facilitate quick refuelling of the locomotive.

The water tower to which the author refers has not been positioned there by anyone in preservation; there are three original water towers surviving at Loughborough. One is to the south of the station in the Up Loop; one is on the north end of the Down platform and the other is slightly to the north of that on what was the Down Main. The last one is the only one currently operational, but even if it was, water is not used as fuel in a steam engine, it is not burned, nor does it go through any chemical reaction. I think it's safe to say that they intended to mean 'refilling,' as steam locomotives needed to be refilled with water (the working fluid of the engine) frequently, given that the cycle was open.VmZH88AZQnCjhT40 (talk) 19:47, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's very unusual for a station to have three water towers; do the objects in question look something like the device to the right of the locomotive in this picture? (sorry, I couldn't find a pic of one of these at Loughborough) If so, they are water cranes, not water towers - a station might well have one water crane on each through track. --Redrose64 (talk) 20:32, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I honestly can't tell from imagery I can access, I only responded because it is obviously a typographical error and not a misunderstanding regarding the flammability of water. As far as the number of water towers, I think having separate towers for potable and industrial service water is reasonable. Another might not even be for water, many industrial containers which don't store liquids at all look like tanks. Finally, is it even encyclopedic to cover the water towers?VmZH88AZQnCjhT40 (talk) 17:54, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
