is it true that the legislation is slightly different in northern ireland? that the rent does not have to be paid to the tennant it can be paid directly to the landlord?

It's a bit of a complex area to describe all the circumstances where LHA/HB can be paid direct to a landlord, although the main one is where the tenant is in arrears of 2 months or more. Ridiculously Unfair System[edit]

If a tenant claiming LHA has their rent increases, their LHA can only be increased a) on the anniversary date of their claim, or b) if they voluntarily suspend their claim and reapply ,which means losing a fortnight's money. So if your landlord doesn't know when your anniversary date is, and puts the rent up eg a day after it, the only way you can get an increase in your benefits is to accept a loss of 2 weeks money!OR lose benefit for another 51 weeks!
