Sourcing, notability, and format[edit]

Hmm... This is a longer (and different) list of Washington nicknames than exists in List of city nicknames in the United States, and there are no reference citations in this article. Much effort has gone into providing WP:RS reference citations for city nicknames, in large part due to criticism the original article received in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of city nicknames in the United States and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of city nicknames in the United States (2nd nomination). The absence of reference citations is a serious problem for these articles. It would be a shame to return to the days when these articles were full of trivial unsourced pseudo-nicknames like "A-town" and "Elmvegas" (shorthand forms like these crop up everywhere), unsourced street slang like "Memphrica", and terms like "Tree City USA" that aren't actually nicknames at all. Unsourced trivial nickname lists are likely to be deleted, as they truly are nonnotable cruft that doesn't have a place in an encyclopedia.

Additionally, it seems to me that it is desirable to have consistency in series of related articles. Elsewhere I've asked for the rationale for changing article names from "List of city nicknames" to "List of settlement nicknames". Seeing this article, I'm also wondering about the reasoning for listing nicknames in order by nickname instead of listing them by place name, as is done in every other Wikipedia "nicknames of places" article that I'm aware of. --Orlady (talk) 04:08, 7 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Followup[edit]

Also, some of the "nicknames" are without a doubt totally made up, not currently in use and likely never have been (while other equally, um, 'colorful' nicknames do exist and aren't in the list so this wikipedia entry is dubious, at best. --Wikiphoto_2010 (talk) 00:22, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

As it happens, my comment in April 2009 was related to a completely different version of this article than exists now. (See the April 2009 version.) The current version is almost completely supported by reliable sources -- the one exception is Chehalis' nickname of "Rose City" (I've seen plenty of evidence that it's really the city's nickname, but no source that explicitly says it's the city nickname). --Orlady (talk) 04:29, 10 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

With all due respect, you call that a 'reliable source'? Please madam, yet again with all do respect, Spokane has plenty of REAL nicknames - some that are really raunchy, others that are kind of funny, and others still that are somewhere in between (and all sadly well-deserved), but the ones listed from your supposed "reliable source" are in fact, totally unreliable and false. No one actually uses any of those. Never have and likely never would because first of all they're mind-numbingly dumb and obviously made up to anyone even remotely familiar with the Inland Empire & Spokane (I mean come on, comparing Spokane to Kentucky? please... that'd be a compliment lol) Seriously, please find a truly reliable source that actually knows anything at all about its subject if you're that motivated to correct someone actually from Spokane (note, I said *from* lol) before reverting to flat out false, made-up sad attempts at some new disparaging 'nicknames' that aren't even that particularly creative. The ones Spokane actually goes by at times by people that are actually are from the general region are pretty good (no less disparaging though, so I wont volunteer them). So again, please leave this alone and kindly STOP reverting back to made up BS. Many thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.90.204.68 (talk) 01:40, 16 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
