An explanation of the delineation between international, regional and national would be useful. --Joy [shallot] 4 July 2005 17:20 (UTC)

How about an explanation of just what a Goodwill Ambassador is? A definition?--Asacan 06:44, 9 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism[edit]

There are multiple issues with this article. Just look at the "United States Goodwill Ambassadors":

More than half of these are obvoiusly American actors, and may or may not be actual ambassadors. If they actually are, they are not sourced. It has been here for months. Some instances have no references or were vandalized without rollback, and have simply stayed here. I will notify WP:Cleanup and tag a cleanup template in the meantime. Cleanup[edit]

  • I've come across this article today during the course of DAB solving and it's appalling how bad a state it's in. There are blatant instances of vandalism and it seems editors in the past have been more concerned with adding names then checking if they're correct and citing reliable sources. Obviously, nobody thus far has been willing to bite the bullet and fix it, so I will.
I will aggressively remove everything I cannot source easily because quite frankly, this article has become a piss-take. I hope to have this completed within a couple of hours.
I would appreciate other editors not altering the page while the "In Use" tag is up. ŞůṜīΣĻ¹98¹Speak 20:30, 20 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Done - It took me considerably more than a couple of hours. Vandalism removed. All entries now correctly sorted with at least one ref. Many entries removed, some added. I'm currently in the process of adding photos, I think I should be able to acquire a few more free-use ones from Flickr.
A couple of points:

  • Unsourced additions will no longer be tolerated. If UNICEF don't say they're an ambassador then they aint going on the list.
  • Don't piss about with altering the sections the names are in. They're currently correct, let's keep it that way.
  • I'd like to see some more references from the media that confirm and expand on the cited info that's already there - the national ambassadors page on UNICEF's website doesn't give much detail as to their activities. BUT citations from the UNICEF site should stay as they provide a reasonably up-to-date guide as to who is actually representing them currently.
  • I know there's more that can be done to the article but my priority was simply to eliminate all the crap and provide an accurate list as soon as possible.

Natalia Oreiro[edit]

Ms Oreiro is classed by UNICEF as a "national ambassador" for two countries, not a "regional ambassador". The citations from UNICEF's website support this, regardless of what Oreiro may say on her personal website. ŞůṜīΣĻ¹98¹Speak 19:32, 29 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Difficult to maintain this page[edit]

This page is difficult to maintain for at least two reasons. First, some Wikipedians, especially IP users, have added names incorrectly, either because of misunderstanding a news article or just plain vandalism. Second, people stop being ambassadors for whatever reason. The correct list of national ambassadors is at "UNICEF People: Goodwill Ambassadors & Advocates: National". UNICEF., the most heavily-used reference in this article. Based on this page, I just updated Armenia, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Colombia, Cuba, Czech Republic (all countries A–C with discrepancies) plus Germany and India. For countries starting D–F I see discrepancies in Denmark, Ecuador (missing section), Ethiopia, Fiji, (missing section), and France. That leaves undoubtedly dozens of countries starting G–Z needing fixes. —Anomalocaris (talk) 21:35, 23 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ambassadors vs "advocates"[edit]

Came here to act on pending changes. The most recent pending, Anne Curtis, is listed at official Unicef pages as a "celebrity advocate," not specifically an "ambassador." Should this and other "advocate" names be included? Pinging @Suriel1981: Comments? DonFB (talk) 03:51, 5 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Resolved[edit]

Resolved. Juliette Han (talk) 01:25, 7 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The following discussion has been closed. Please do not modify it.

There was some argument about whether Dmitry Fedorov is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. The accepted version of the article lists him as one, but on the ground of two problematic links. The first one is archived ([1]); the current version of regional UNICEF website not only does not contain anything about Fedorov ([2]) but also explicitly does not include it in the list of the ambassadors from the region ([3]: ctrl+F 'Федоров' to ensure). The second link ([4]) leads to what is clearly not an official UNICEF webpage, claims that Fedorov is on the "Executive Board" of UNICEF as a "Representative for Goodwill Ambassador Work", an office one can find nothing about on the web.

I suggest the notion of Fedorov be deleted from the list. Wanwa (talk) 02:33, 5 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Wanwa:, ([5]) is an archived version of an official regional UNICEF website. Archived sources are reliable and are widely used to back up facts in Wikipedia articles - can't see anything 'problematic' here. As per ([6]), quote: 'Please note: UNICEF National Committees and Country Offices worldwide have their own Ambassadors.' In view of the above, obviously, this page does not include every national ambassador there is. Juliette Han (talk) 06:26, 6 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • Yet, there is virtually no proof Fedorov is at the moment holding some positions at UNICEF. Archived sources are reliable on the matters that are not as easily outdated + we have access to a UNICEF website, and it does not list him. Even if Fedorov once was an ambassador (which I honestly doubt), I am hesitant we should store this information. Plus, existence of some other ambassadors not listed on a UNICEF webpage does not prove Fedorov is one. Wanwa (talk) 21:20, 6 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The article UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador by default is a redirect link to the List of UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors article. This article is supported by WikiProject United Nations and is relative to soft power and diplomacy in international relations. The article is about the title of authority and legal status of the style (manner of address) for goodwill ambassadors and to identify those individuals that have been commissioned with honorable title(s) "Goodwill Ambassador", "Advocate", "Consul" and/or "Envoy". For all intents and purposes the term advocate has also been adopted by some of the United Nations specialized agencies in a sense and way to refer to activism, not to a lawyer, but perhaps to an ombudsman, to avoid redundancy and repetition the terms goodwill ambassador and advocate may be used as an alternate synonymous term.

Identifying and connecting UNICEF goodwill ambassadors with the United Nations and their individual missions is important to newspaper, magazine and online editors; it may also be important to the safety of these individuals depending on their mission, many United Nations goodwill ambassadors are not known very well outside of their region or nation. If you can improve this article by adding content or see anyone missing from it that has been overlooked or does not belong there, then please edit it. It is also acceptable to list "former UNICEF goodwill ambassadors" as well if there is a reference. Problemsmith (talk) 17:20, 25 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
