Episode list Rendering Error[edit]

The entry for episode 8 in the Episode List (Kitumba) is rendering misaligned (too narrow), at least on my platform. (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.0.10) Gecko/2009042708 Fedora/3.0.10-1.fc10 Firefox/3.0.10)

I've uploaded a section of the rendered page, highlighting the problem area, to my photobucket account: screenshot

This is apparently due to the ShortSummary for that entry being TOO short. (Experimentally editing the page to include a longer description confirms.)

Simply coming up with a longer summary of the entry would certainly correct the symptom, but not solve the underlying problem... does anyone know of a way to fix the Episode List for entries with short-ShortSummaries? Is this something that should be taken up against Template:Episode list?

FeRD_NYC (talk) 16:24, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for that. I spent a bunch of time trying to figure out the cause before our last shoot and did not have the time to figure it out and fix it.
Best,

No problem! I felt bad that I couldn't just fix it myself ("Be Bold" and all), but of course the one thing I couldn't provide was a longer description -- other than just stuffing it with nonsense, of course (which is how I tested).
I went back into the problem tonight, expecting to report it as a bug against Template:Episode_list, but along the way I'm afraid I discovered that the problem does appear to lie with the way you're making use of the template. (But, I can offer a fix!)
First off, I noticed that all the entries seemed disjoint, like they weren't all part of a single table. A peek at the HTML code confirmed that. Long story short, the problem stems from the "Guest Starring:" lists. The ShortSummary field doesn't seem to be built for complex wikimarkup -- it causes each entry to be rendered as its own separate table, which results in the uneven widths for different entries, exactly what I was seeing on the page.
It IS possible to use multiple paragraphs and bullet lists in the ShortSummary, they simply have to be created by hand using HTML, not wikimarkup. See User:FeRD_NYC/EpisodeList, which is a re-coded version of your Episodes section, using bare HTML for the ShortSummary's. This keeps from breaking the wikitable, and allows ShortSummary fields of any length without formatting damage (as my entry for episode Pi demonstrates).
The only bummer is the bit of extra vertical whitespace following each list. I couldn't find a way to eliminate that. But as long as all ShortSummary's are wrapped in <p> and </p> paragraph delimiters (like the entry for "Mind-Sifter"), then the entries without lists will be formatted to match. (The following entry, for "Bandi", illustrates what it looks like when an entry DOESN'T contain paragraph delimiters.)
If you're comfortable with the way User:FeRD_NYC/EpisodeList formats and is coded, I'd be happy to update the code on this page. Or, if it's of any use to you, you're encouraged to make use of my code however you wish in modifying the page yourself.

Hi FeRD,
I'm not sure who set up the episode page originally (but it wasn't us). Someone tried adding an episode for us, and I've been trying to fix the formatting.
What you've got is great! I guess I would prefer if you updated it to avoid the look of COI - though I guess it would be hard to apply it (COI) to an episode list. If you cant get to it, then I'll just grab what you've got and paste it in and plod through it.
Thanks again!
RobertMfromLI | RobertMfromLI 07:09, 19 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I completely understand, and applaud your caution -- I'm sure someone could find a way to claim COI with an eplist -- this is Wikipedia.
I suppose there are two schools of thought about it. In my mind, it's somewhat natural for somone as involved in something as you are to "own" the page about it, as long as they're conscious of neutrality. Is it a "conflict" for Neil deGrasse Tyson to contribute to the Astrophysics page? (...Probably, but Wikipedia would be lucky to have such a conflict!) ;)
Anyway, I've just updated the page with the new table formatting, and added a comment detailing the restrictions for any future editors. (I first ported forward the recent edits into my reformatted table, so the information contained should match the previous revision.)

Air Date for Blood and Fire Part 2 change has been reverted.[edit]

I have reverted Captjc's edit of the air date, as he is incorrect.

His edit, one day after the release, was removing the correct date and replacing it with "TBA": "Changed air date of Blood and Fire Pt 2 as it has yet to air)"

BaF Part 2 has already been released (Nov 20th, 2009) and announced numerous places on the STP2 forum.

The episode can be viewed at http://videos.startrekphase2media.com/BaF2/ or downloaded from the mirror sites as of 19:00EST Nov 20, 2009.

I have also added the running length. I have not updated any other content on it.

Well, someone tried removing the release date for BaF Part 2 again. Thank you to whoever corrected their vandalism. I've since corrected a misplaced item value (release date was put into running time field).
To hopefully prevent this from happening again, it was announced here on Nov 20th, 2009
http://www.startreknewvoyages.com/forum/index.php?topic=9847.0
And has been reviewed here:

Inotherwords, this episode IS released, and was released (with announcement) on 11/20/2009.

Max Rem/Doug Drexler[edit]

Hi,

Would it be appropriate to link Max Rem to Doug Drexler's page as both he and we (STP2) have made it publicly known that the two are one and the same? The credit should still read Max Rem probably, since that is how it is in the episode.

Any questions, comments, suggestions?

Episodes 9 & 10 "Origins"[edit]

Hello all,

Just an FYI, "Origins" is the "working title" of the episode. An actual production name has not yet been decided upon. The episode will be filmed June 2nd-June 15th, 2010.

In addition, regarding the Vignettes section, I have contributed one non-COI change. It is a simple grammar change. It previously read:

"Re-filming some to the vignettes has been discussed as a possibility."

It now reads (emphasis not on actual page): "Re-filming some OF the vignettes has been discussed as a possibility."

Best, Robert

RobertMfromLI | User Talk STP2: Producer/Gaffer/Webmaster 05:12, 17 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This (Origins) should actually be episode #9. Episode #10 has not yet been announced. Mind Sifter should be ?? instead of episode #11. The website has not yet been updated to reflect this, (COI Notice: I am the Line Producer for the series) so I do not expect that anyone will simply jump on this change. I'll post a link to the announcements here when they are made, at which time, those without a COI can decide whether they deem the changes appropriate. Things editor to this page may wish to research and/or change...[edit]

Hello all, I will not make these updates, as I do not wish any of my updates to seem like a conflict of interests (I'm one of the show's producers).

Kitumba: This is incorrect: "post-production - finishing special effects." It should probably read "post-production". This change was done by someone involved in the episode (COI) who is not accurately portraying the status of the episode - nor can they cite any such information anywhere (which I would know, since I do all our web posts of this nature, as well as make the releases available and run the Post-Production FTP server where the in-progress episodes reside).

Episode 9&10 - Origins As noted on IMDb, the title is "The Protracted Man" (Origins was the "working title), and it is episode 9 (Ep 10 will be Mind Sifter, as announced in our forums). Episode numbers and names can also be confirmed on our forum announcements and articles written elsewhere about the production (such as TrekMovie)

Episode 11 - Mind Sifter As noted above, this will be episode 10, not episode 11.

IP/Anon revert...[edit]

Hello all, an anon added descriptions for our vignettes. While it was very thoughtful, it was also a copyvio. No, we did not request it to be removed, but as we cannot provide the text under suitable license, Fastily removed it because even though we don't mind, it is STILL against Wikipedia's policies. He suggested I re-write the sections, which I may when I have time - if someone else doesn't get to it. Anyway, I've added back the release date for No Win Scenario that was removed when the anon was reverted, which I am hoping no one thinks is a COI violation. If no one beats me to writing a short synopsis for each vignette, I will attempt to do so soon. Please feel free to change it - to anything but a copyvio that is (and/or advise me if it seems COI-ish). Best, Rob (Star Trek Phase 2 Team, Producer, Copyright Agent, etc, etc, see user page, etc).
