Who is a Moldovan?[edit]

Well... it could mean either:

  • citizens of Moldova, regardless of their ethnic identification
  • people that identify themselves as "Moldovans"

Now it seems that this list includes people before the Republic of Moldova existed and that identified themselves as Romanians. Alexei Mateevici, for example, lived all his life in the Bessarabia region (today's Moldova) of the Russian Empire and he always said he was a Romanian. Why should he (and others like him) be a "Moldovan" ? Of course, you could extend the meaning of Moldovan to include all people of historical Moldova, including Mihai Eminescu and Ion Creanga, but this is not the case here. bogdan | Talk 15:16, 17 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Gender[edit]

Umm, is Olga Bolsova a sportsman? ;-)

Why are the politicians on top of the list? I'd rather put musicians or writers up there. Or perhaps sort it alphabetically... --Illythr 12:40, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Moldavian[edit]

Although today´s Moldova republic is not same as former Moldavia principaute, could some historial persons added here? --Roksanna 19:39, 12 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

for example (at least the last was born in today´s Moldavia)

To revisit[edit]

There's a bit of a problem with this list. The lead says it only includes citizens of Moldova, when in fact I see plenty of Ottoman, Russian and Romanian citizens who died well before Moldova gained independence in 1991. On the other hand, it doesn't include the national hero, Stephen the Great. Perhaps we should revisit the criteria for inclusion. Personally, I would at least include inhabitants of Soviet Moldavia who died before 1991, someone like Nikolai Koval. Biruitorul Talk 05:04, 22 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Then shouldn't "Moldovan SSR" in the lead be changed to "Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic"? The precise national status of those in the list would be clarified somewhat if their dates (and possibly cities/regions) of birth and death were listed where possible. The lead could also be expanded with clearer explanations.--Ipigott (talk) 10:01, 15 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
