Removals

I have removed a large section of this article in order to bring it up to a consistent criteria. Note that the most common definition of terrorism is indiscriminate attacks against civilians to achieve a political or religious goal. Islamic terrorist attacks are terrorist attacks carried out by Islamic groups. Hence the following do not fall under the definition of terrorist attacks:

  • Attacks against military targets (a group targeting a military barrack is not an act of terrorism)
  • Attacks which are not indiscriminate (for example, a person killing another person over a dispute is not terrorism)
  • Attacks which do not have a political or religious motive are not terrorism (example - a cricket riot between Pakistani and Sri Lankan cricket fans)
  • An attack carried out by a group which is not Islamist (for example, a terrorist attack by a communist group is not Islamic terrorism, even if the perpetrator is from a Muslim background).
  • Plots (this is a list of terrorist attacks - a contentious plot contested in courts is not a terrorist attack)

The reason behind the change is pretty self-explanatory. An article called "List of Islamic terrorist attacks" should be a list of Islamic terrorist attacks, and nothing else. Poyani (talk) 20:51, 28 November 2012 (UTC)


Suggestion to merge with Islamic terrorism after 9/11

Bad idea. This list contains "List_of_Islamic_terrorist_attacks" -- NOT List_of_Islamic_terrorist_attacks_after_9-11. There were many Islamic terrorist attacks before 9/11 2001. Geĸrίtzl (talk) 15:17, 17 December 2012 (UTC)

format issue

I'd like to sort this list by parsing it into a database, unfortunately the formatting is not strict enough.

most list items are structured so they can be parsed for country, dead, and injured; example:

  • India 13 December 2001 – Suicide attack on Indian parliament in New Delhi by Pakistan-based Islamist terrorist organizations, Jaish-E-Mohammad and Lashkar-e-Toiba. Aimed at eliminating the top leadership of India and causing anarchy in the country. 7 dead, 12 injured.

There's

  2. it's followed by a date
  3. and there's "7 dead, 12 injured" at the end

entries like the below, however, can't be parsed with reasonable effort:

POV

Aside from being one of the worst cases of WP:SYNTH, this article advances a POV used for pushing a racist agenda. A great deal of the material here can't even be categorized as "terrorism". "Terrorism" is largely an undefined word, but its most basic parameters include random attacks against civilians. Attacks against military targets are never terrorism. This article includes attacks against US, UK, Israeli and Pakistani soldiers, all of which are NOT terrorism by the very definition of the word. Furthermore, it lists terrorist attacks by groups or organizations which do not even have Islamist agendas. For example the Abu Nidal group is never described by anyone as an Islamist terrorist groups. The religion of the perpetrators of their attacks are not usually known. Furthermore, the list includes targeted killings of specific individuals, which again is not terrorism. Terrorism is defined as random attacks against civilians. Theo Van Gough was specifically targeted. He was not the victim of a random attack. Acts of war between two sides in a civil war are listed here also as terrorism.

In essence, the authors of this article has put together a mix of unrelated material to create as much incitement against Muslims as possible. It is terrible unencyclopedic and should be deleted or totally revamped. Poyani (talk) 16:58, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

Abu Nidal was indeed listed as a terrorist organization by various governments. In fact there's an extensive history, on them. As for your point on Terrorism isn't terrorism if it isn't random. The UN itself listed and defined what terrorism is under General assembly 51/210. That base definition is the legal definition in nearly all western courts today, as evidenced by case law. This ridiculous "counter" is further evidence of the ad-hoc propagandistic nature of this page. Had the person countering me read what I wrote they would see that I did not question whether or not Abu Nidal was a terrorist group. I was questioning whether or not it was an Islamic group. Abu Nidal was a mercenary organization for hire. How does that make their action "Islamic terrorist attacks"? The ideology of the group was certainly not Muslim. Nobody actually knows the religion of many of the members who committed terrorist attacks. So what exactly qualifies them as Islamic terrorist attacks? The answer is: nothing. If reliable sources say a person or a group which committed a terrorist act are "Muslim", then they belong in this article. How calm I am is not relevant. Read WP:SYNTH and you will see this is a perfect example of it. This is clearly original research and doesn ot belong on Wikipedia. Same goes with Christian terrorism and Jewish terrorism. For the record, the articles on Jewish and Christian terrorism do not use the same metric as you listed above "if reliable sources say a person or a group which committed a terrorist act are 'Muslim', then they belong in this article". In other words, just because Timothy McVeigh and Ted Kaczynski were Christians does not make their actions "Christian terrorism" and hence they are NOT listed in that article. That would have been a monumentally stupid mistake, which the editors of Christian terrorism did not make and yet the editors of this article (most notably yourself) clearly ARE making. "Islamic terrorism" is religious attacks against civilians committed to achieve political ends in the name of Islam. Just because an attack is carried by a Muslim, does not make it an example of "Islamic Terrorism". Groups like the Arab Liberation Front, The PLO, Black September, Abu Nidal Organization, PFLP, DFLP etc are not Islamic groups. Some are communist groups. Others are nationalist groups. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. This article lists attacks which were clearly against military targets; it lists attacks where the perpetrators are not known; it lists attacks which were part of a civil wars; it lists attacks by separatist groups with Islamic identities; etc. It is one of the worst examples of Original Research being used to push a ridiculous POV.   • All these acts are committed by Islamic fundamentalists (a.k.a fundamental Muslims ) for achieving Islamic goals that range from political to Religious.
  • This Article does not violate any fundamentals of Wikipedia and maintains strict neutral point of view on all incidents listed.
  • As regards to information about Muslim groups fighting against extremists and terrorism ,well it's extremist Muslim groups that are causing Terrorism and the groups that are fighting this include organizations like NATO, Consilium(within Europe), US department of state(in US) among many others.
  • If one regards that Terrorism is largely undefined then this list of daily mass murders carried out by fundamental Islamic groups can be listed as List of Attacks by Fundamental Islamic Organizations
  • This list includes deadly terror attacks on targets ranging from civilian to military carried out by Fundamental Islamic Groups and not by people perceived to be Muslims, also this article does not list the religion of the perpetrators of these terror attacks as Muslim or christian or Atheist.

Rim Sim, you must not be looking at the same article as me. Can you show a single reliable source which indicates, lets say, any of the first three incidents listed, are acts of "Islamic terrorism" as you defined above, i.e. "mass murdering and bombing of innocent civilians for perceived political or Islamic reasons carried out by Islamic fundamentalist"? The first three incidents listed are the 1980 Misgav Am hostage crisis, the 1980 Belgium granade attack, and the 1981 Vienna synagogue attack. The wikipedia article for each attack explains it was done by Arab nationalists and mercenaries (such as Abu Nidal Organization) and not Muslim fundamentalists. Said Al Nasr

I removed this, as Abu Nidal is not an Islamist organization and can find no sources that Al Nasr's motivations had to do with Islam:

I removed this as (a) the source says that the Iraqi government accused the Syrian secret service of perpetrating this attack, so that (b) it's actually not known who did it, and (c) the Syrian secret service is not exactly an Islamist organization and (d) even if it were, the source gives no motive so the list's inclusion criteria are not verified:

I removed this because even the (unreliable) source doesn't claim it had anything to do with Islam. Does every truck bombing in every majority Islamic country go on this list? If so, the title needs to be changed.

November 11, 1982

I removed this as the source cited says that Israel believed it to be the work of the PLO, not an Islamist organization, and also that "Beirut newspapers reportedly received statements from a group calling itself the Military Command of the Lebanese Resistance declaring that the blast was in revenge for the massacre of Palestinian refugees at two Beirut camps in September," which is not an Islamist issue.

I removed this because the group claiming responsibility attributed the attack thusly: "This is part of the Iranian revolution's campaign against imperialist targets throughout the world. We shall keep striking at any imperialist presence in Lebanon, including the international force." Anti-imperialism is not an Islamic political or religious goal.

As far as I can see, no one actually knows what the motive for this attack was, but most speculation seems to be that it has to do with the Lebanese civil war, which is hardly based on Islamic religious or political reasons in any straightforward way. No one's actually willing to say for sure who did it, either.

First, nobody's sure who did it. Second, nobody's sure why. The best source they can find in the article here about it says: "The motivation of the bombing is suspect to have been punishment against Kuwait, America and France for their military and financial assistance to Iraq in the Iran–Iraq War." How's that a "perceived Islamic religious or political cause"?

This one's a little more interesting, thank goodness. The hijackers stated that they wanted the release of a bunch of Muslim prisoners. However, I can find no source which says that they wanted the release of those prisoners for perceived Islamic religious or political reasons. Lots of people demand the release of prisoners for various things, and the prisoners have religions, but it doesn't mean that their release is being demanded because of their religions. Even if the prisoners are members of an Islamist group it still can't be assumed that there are "Islamic religious or political reasons" for the hijacking in an attempt to get them released. We certainly need a source that will say this. There won't be one, though, I don't think, because actually no one knows the details.

Poyani-we have never said that these acts are committed by muslims, it's Islamic fundamentalists.

why this article need not be Deleted

This article need not be deleted as the editors have picked a series of terrorist attacks where the perpetrators are Muslims from reliable news sources like Reuters,CNN,BBC,Al-jazeera among many others. Islamic terrorism is generally defined as attacks against civilians by Islamic groups to further an Islamic political cause. Many apologists seem to be sympathetic to the ideals of Islamic expansion through violence,lest they must also give a though to numerous people that are killed every year by these terrorists.This list enables the future generations to get a good idea of threats the world faces from terrorists. It is not Wikipedia's aim to "enable future generations to get a good idea of threats the world faces from terrorists". Wikipedia's aim is to present information from reliable sources. There is no reliable sources which lists the group of attacks mentioned under "Islamic terrorist attacks". This is original research and it should be deleted. Note that the "Request for Deletion" doesn't automatically delete the page. It sends it to admins which review and decide whether it is to be deleted. What the hell do you mean, "no reliable sources"??? All these attacks have been reported in the news, and can be verified simply by checking the back issues of any major newspaper! In fact, the ONLY words in the whole article that can even REMOTELY be classified as "original research" is the part about Islamic revival, which I just fixed! Really? The attacks by Pakistani cricket hooligans against the Sri Lankan cricket bus have been described by news sources as "Islamic terrorism"? The inclusion criteria for this list include: terror attacks by Islamic fundamentalists to further a perceived Islamic religious or political cause. I'll buy that the Muslim Brotherhood are Islamic fundamentalists, but the source cited doesn't say anything about their motivation. Even including the Muslim Brotherhood attacks on this basis is OR. If there is no listed RS which clearly explains that the perpetrators are engaging in the act for the purpose of establishing an Islamic agenda and the attack qualifies as "terrorism" then there is absolutely no basis for including any of them. The Muslim Brotherhood's values are clearly Islamic, but so are the Christian parties which rule many European countries (such as Germany). The direct motivation for the Muslim brotherhood's attacks are to displace the current dictatorships in those countries, not to achieve social Islamic political goals. Furthermore, the Egyptian government typically blames ALL attacks on the Muslims Brotherhood because they are the government's primary rival. That is true even when the attacks are clearly by others. I agree. I left it on because I hadn't yet realized the depth of the problem and then someone else edited and I had to stop for the day (I assume this article is under 1RR). I have not been able to find sources for this incident that state that it's in the scope of the list. It also occurred to me that basing the list on the intention of the actors whose actions are listed is inherently problematic unless both the actors and the acted-upon agree on the actors' intentions, e.g. 9/11. First of all, no one's willing to say definitely what the motives were. The source in this article explicitly does not. Later sources speculate and contradict one another. Finally, even if it were Muslim Chechens who were responsible, given that they feel that their country is occupied by Russia, a case for an Islamist motive is hard to sustain. Decent sources are needed, and I can't find any.

Removal of map

I removed this map because the cited source says it shows attacks by Islamist terror groups, but it doesn't sort them by motivation, so it's impossible to tell if it applies to the inclusion criteria for this list or not. Thus its presence is misleading.

I'm done removing stuff. I didn't start talk page sections for what seemed to me like clear-cut cases, but of course am always open to reasoned discussion regarding everything.
