Title references[edit]

I was wondering if anyone else thought it useful or relevant to have something about the meanings of the titles somewhere on the page. Obviously, each episode is a word or phrase relating to the story of the episode in Hawaiian, but some people might be interested to have a translation here. ABC has thus far released the English meanings within the episode press releases so they obviously think it has some notability. If people agree, how should it be formatted? I know that the Big Bang Theory pages put an explanaition of the title in the short summaries, or we could create a special table for the translation. Personally I'm not particularly fussed about it either way, but if there are people here who think it would be relevant then I wouldn't mind having it. I've removed these once more, these are not alternative titles, they are translations. Episode 10 has an actual alternative title which has been repeatedly removed in favor of these translations. And they are ultimately trivial anyway. Xeworlebi (talk) 19:07, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but now I've learned how to add a new category to the table which will list them not as Alternate titles but as English translations. I feel it's a good compromise .
It is a good compromise because it allows our readers to see the translations but doesn't put them as high of a priority as Alternate Titles...Lilly (talk) 19:41, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dancing Men Code[edit]

There is a variant of the dancing man code on a postcard within the champion toolbox in s01e05. McGarrett’s sister Mary, closes the episode taking pictures of several items, including this card. Three words or eleven unique characters are printed on it, there is also a postmark from China. U.S. Ratings Table[edit]

Why can't I add U.S. ratings table? There is more to TV ratings in the U.S. than just the number of viewers watching each episode. The U.S. also has the rating/share of households and rating/share of the age demographic 18-49. The 18-49 age demographic is actually more important to networks in the U.S. than the total number of viewers watching each episode. DVR ratings[edit]

The list below shows ratings for Hawaii Five-0 season one including the increase from Live+7 DVRs, as the series is often high on this kind of viewing. I have decided to place them there so somebody can decide whether or not to replace them with Live viewings in the episode table, or to include it in the ratings section for each episode article. We seem to be going nowhere fast... So I'm doing a RFC[edit]

Is it beneficial to have the English translations of the titles for Hawaiian names of episodes?

This is the basic gist of it: I say yes because:

  • most people can't remember the Hawaiian names
  • most readers of English Wikipedia don't speak Hawai'ian
  • CBS includes translations in their press releases
  • I do agree they are not alternate titles but as they are translations, I used Aux1 to be the column for English translation

Xeworlebi says no because:

  • They are not alternative titles
  • the actual alternative title was removed for one episode (but I'd like to point out that I left it there and some IP removed it)
  • They are trivial.

It seems that the translation would be helpful. Many users would find this information helpful. The fact that CBS includes translations in their press releases means you can get a properly cited translation. As long as it is made clear the translation is not part of the episode title it seems like a good addition.meitme (talk) 18:34, 25 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that translations are valuable. We routinely provide translations for all sorts of foreign-language phrases. The usual thing to do is to provide it in square brackets, like this: Clamo, clamatis, omnes clamamus pro glace lactis [I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream]. I came here looking for translations of the titles, and when I didn't find them, I set out to provide them, and ran into this controversy; my little edit (linking the title "Ohana" to the existing Wikipedia page by that name) was undone in eleven minutes. While that was happening, I was trying to add the phrase "Malama Ka Aina" ("Care for the Land") to the Wiktionary (modeling on the existing entry for "mele Kalikimaka", "Merry Christmas") and within a few minutes it was deleted, not corrected, because it was capitalized and missing an apostrophe. Don't y'all work with people? Do you just delete each other's stuff? No wonder you're "going nowhere fast!"   • Comment: I just came across this. I don't agree with the contention the English titles aren't alternate titles. If CBS includes them on the press release, they mean for them to be made public, and possibly used. That suggests an alternate title to me. I see no harm in adding the English titles, moreover, given our mission to inform, I find it bewildering anyone would question the addition of the translations, which are common practice in other context. Yeah I will. I kinda forgot about this because for about 2 or so weeks after I did an RFC I got no response so I just forgot. Anyhow translations up and added correct ʻ ʻ instead of apostrophes. A mini manual of style.[edit]

1. For example when there are two HAWAIIAN titles the primary one should be listed as " Title = Awesome title " (minus the quotes) when there is another secondary HAWAIIAN title, right underneath the above line about the title should be " AltTitle = Less awesome title " (again minus quotes) Then the english translation should be listed underneath that line as " Aux1 = boring english title " (once again...)

Also many of the Hawaiian titles have ʻokinas. CBS uses them as apostropes, however that is not correct. To insert an ʻokina, you simply type okina between TWO SETS {{ }}. Remember that Oʻahu has an ʻokina. However although it is more correct to say "Hawaiʻi" as the English language has fully absorbed Hawaii without the ʻokina, I think we should leave it out in the word Hawaii. Also it seems to me like in the show McGarrett is the only one referred to by last name, almost never by Steve. Even amongst friends and Kono, Danny and Chin Ho. Therefore I think that we should use McGarrett to refer to him and first names for the rest of the team. (Danny, Kono, Chin Ho.)
