Order

It's hard to see categories of people in this listing. For example, if you want to know how many Harvardks served on the Supreme Court, or are working the media and entertainment fields, or earned a Nobel, you have to use the "find" button a lot, whereas other college listings have them conveniently grouped.

I'm not sure what advantage an alphabetical order provides, since all modern browsers allow you to "find" a name if you're looking for it. - User:4.227.175.60 May 24, 2004

There are numerous problems with categorization:
  1. there are people who belong in multiple categories, or for whom it is unclear what category they belong in. Is a person a "writer", a "poet", an "author", or a "journalist"? Is a person primarily a "mathematician" or a "physicist"?
  2. there will be certain limited categories with only one person
  3. it is often unclear how exactly to name categories
  4. it is often unclear what categories fit into which other categories: if we have a category called "politicians," do we put all politicians under that category, including Presidents of the United States? Or do we put Presidents in a separate category? What if Harvard has a lot of Senators? Do they also belong in a separate category?
  5. what if a person is regarded by some to be a certain type of person, but perhaps himself or others denies this?
Alphabetical order avoids putting people into absolute categories, and it avoids double-listing people. Like you said, modern browsers have a Find button, and it's not that hard to use to find everyone involved in whatever you're looking for. --Lowellian 20:26, Sep 23, 2004 (UTC)

A Find button doesn't get the job done when you're looking for foreign leaders (for example) where there is no common title that they all share. A categorization need not be MECE. -- M Pinck 18:58, 8 August 2006 (UTC)

Article name

This article is badly titled and violates the naming conventions. Move it to List of people affiliated with Harvard University, or better, split it into List of Harvard University alumni and List of Harvard University faculty. --Jiang 03:59, 27 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Note: At the time the above comment was written, this article was located at [[Harvard University people]]. It has since been moved to [[List of Harvard University people]]. Lowellian (talk)[[]] 09:08, Oct 31, 2004 (UTC)
Have to agree that this article name is terrible. I think either the change or split approach would be good. 198.204.141.208 (talk) 20:30, 19 June 2013 (UTC)
It's a larger issue than this article. See Category:Lists of people by university or college in the United States.--Epeefleche (talk) 23:55, 19 June 2013 (UTC)

Seperate list

Why is there a seperate for Notable non-graduate alumni of Harvard? This list includes several non-graduates - should they be on the other list, or should that list be merged with this article? 172.213.5.133 15:29, 3 September 2006 (UTC)

Adding citations

It's time we finally add citations to each entry in this list. This will help clean it up, allow verification, and avoid future incorrect additions. Please pick a few from this list to verify, and add a simple citation after the degree of the entry. Thanks! Gzkn 13:57, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

Removing date of birth/death

I also believe that that date of birth/death for each entry should be removed from this list. As I'm going through this list and cleaning it up, I am finding many entries who have already passed away but are still listed as alive here. As this list grows, it will become harder and harder to maintain the accuracy of whether or not those on this list are alive. If there are no objections after five days, I will begin removing these dates so that readers are not presented with false information. Gzkn 02:04, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Sorting the List

What do people think of sectioning off this list into groups (such as at List of Yale University people? Would make it easier to browse in my opinion. Gzkn 02:08, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

That's an excellent idea. A categorized list would be organized, and I wouldn't be surprised if readers were to appreciate the list more. The list of Georgia Tech alumni is a featured list that uses the template Template:AlumniStart. This template takes up less space than the wikitable which is currently used in the list right now. If no one objects to this idea, I say we start organizing the list by category and start using the said template. BlueAg09 (Talk) 08:17, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

Nearly thirty radical edits, deletions and redirects in just a few days is just way over the top. There was no need for radical surgery - nor the gut and butchering that was employed here. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.253.202.168 (talk) 00:41, 8 December 2006 (UTC).

I'm disappointed that you attack my good faith edits (which included slogging through the A's and parts of the B's and adding sources, removing nonnotable people, and reorganizing the lead) as "radical", "over the top", and "butchering". If you want to own this page, feel free. I'm done trying to improve this list. Gzkn 05:37, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

Matt Damon

Why is Matt Damon not in this list? 58.187.49.120 (talk) 16:42, 6 June 2008 (UTC)

People to add

New here, BUt the Winklevoss twins are yet to be added: Cameron n Tyler Winklevoss (under athletes) , Mark Zukerberg himself (under software people), Divya Narendra and maybe Edwardo Saverin. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rajskhot (talkcontribs) 10:03, 11 April 2011 (UTC)

The Prime Minister of israel, why he is not in the list? --85.130.252.208 (talk) 23:34, 3 December 2009 (UTC)

Self-appointed notables

Why is Seda Pumpyanskaya on this page? Does nobody check to see whether people's claims are justified? Can anybody decide that they are a famous Harvard graduate? Annettelucy (talk) 18:45, 28 January 2010 (UTC)

David A. Morse

He is not a Nobel prize winner but the organization ILO; see here: Nobel official site-laureatesAssianir (talk) 14:39, 10 February 2011 (UTC)

Cordwainer Smith

I have removed the entry for Cordwainer Smith [so listed rather than under his real name, Paul Linebarger]. As a Harvard alum and a Smith fan, I would be happy if he belonged here, but his one-year instructorship is not even mentioned in most biographies; he has always been associated instead with Johns Hopkins and Duke, where all of his significant time and effort in academia was spent. Mandrakos (talk) 03:54, 9 February 2013 (UTC)

Proposed merge: List of Harvard University non-graduate alumni into this list

It looks like this merger was proposed multiple times but never went anywhere or never followed up. List of Harvard University non-graduate alumni's lead says "This is a list of notable people who attended Harvard University, but did not graduate or have yet to graduate. See List of Harvard University people for a fuller list of people affiliated with Harvard." Those who "have yet to graduate" not actually alumni, and this list does not explicitly discriminate against people who fell short of graduating (and thus duplicates several names from the other list). As the other list seems an ill-updated mess with no dated talk page comments since 2006, I propose whatever is not already here be merged and that turned into a redirect. --— Rhododendrites talk |  02:37, 26 June 2014 (UTC)

I second this. Bill Gates is in this article. Why not include Mark Zuckerberg and Gabe Newell as well? Shuipzv3 (talk) 11:28, 1 July 2014 (UTC)
Support. No sense having two lists when this list isn't limited to only alumni that graduated. Patken4 (talk) 18:46, 3 July 2014 (UTC)
Oppose. At an institution such as Harvard a distinction can and should be made between those who are members of the community and notable Harvard personages and between those, like Seeger, Parsons or Raitt, who although notable in their own right have a connection to Harvard that is truncated and less direct.
There are already problems in using the Harvard list in sifting through Nobel Laureates, Presidents, powerful graduates, authors, artists and tutors to bother salting it with a number of people whose only claim to a link was to have written a check and passed through the Yard.76.239.16.143 (talk) 14:21, 15 October 2014 (UTC)
"Institution such as Harvard" sounds like it has to do with prestige/elite status than any particular encyclopedic reason. Whatever standard we apply to this we should be ready to apply to every such university page, because Wikipedia's not going to draw lines based on some variable university rankings somewhere. But regardless, there's a "class year" column that could simply indicate "did not graduate". It also sounds like there's an objection to the increase in size, but I think that's a separate concern. The question is really "should a university have separate articles for people and non-graduate alumni"? If the answer is no, which I think only makes sense, they should be merged. If the list is growing too long there are other ways of dealing with it, like for example splitting it into alumni (graduating and not), faculty, and administration. --— Rhododendrites talk \\ 18:32, 15 October 2014 (UTC)
It's not prestige as most dropped out - it's the sheer depth and breadth of these various lists and the concept of the talented, brilliant and beautiful loser that can walk away and still leave an indelible mark on the world, or the many others in which we see tragedy and pathos. It's a list no different than this list for non-graduate alumni at West Point:List_of_United_States_Military_Academy_non-graduate_alumni . These lists are unique and interesting as stand alone articles. Edgar Allan Poe, Timothy Leary, reality tv, rock & roll - the lists are fascinating items of interest that tell a story, a refraction of the institutions they relate to and present.76.239.18.155 (talk) 19:51, 15 October 2014 (UTC)
  • No, it's just one of many potential slice-and-dices. It should be merged here. EEng 17:34, 7 May 2016 (UTC)

Should we clarify what a "harvard university person" is?

Is it someone who graduated from Harvard? Or someone who works there/is associated with Harvard? Bali88 (talk) 19:09, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
