In the second paragraph of Early life, change Miranda worked on adding "freestyle rap ... bodegas, and salsa numbers."[6] to Miranda worked on adding "freestyle rap ... and salsa numbers."[6] The full quote from the reference is "I put in all the things I'd always wanted to see onstage: propulsive freestyle rap scenes outside of bodegas, salsa numbers that also revealed character and story." As it stands, the abridged quotation suggests that a bodega is a type of song, which it's not -- it's a small grocery store. Jsbohannon (talk) 21:25, 13 June 2016 (UTC)

Hamilton's America.

I watched Great Performances tonight on PBS. The episode is called Hamilton's America. It covers highlights of Hamilton's life, how Lin-Manuel Miranda found the biography by Ron Chernow, how it seized his imagination, and covers the 5-1/2 years it took for him to write and open the show. Insights by Miranda and other cast members are woven throughout. The thoughts of others are featured, including those of Chernow and Presidents Bush and Obama. Substantial segments from the major songs are included.

Since this documentary gives a lot of insight into Miranda's life and creative process, I think it will be useful for the authors here. Hamilton's America is available on PBS to view. The running time is 1:22:35; the webpage says that access expires 11/19/16. http://www.pbs.org/arts/pbs-arts-festival/2016/great-performances-hamiltons-america/ I'm sure that you will enjoy it.

Content split proposal

An editor recently created List of awards and nominations received by Lin-Manuel Miranda, but it was poorly formatted and deleted. However, Miranda's list of awards is fairly significant; should it be split onto its own page? Primefac (talk) 14:03, 25 January 2017 (UTC)

In answer to this proposal (although I did not see the mentioned previous awards article), I have created the article again with some awards that were not listed in this article and references to every award. I split them up into 'Film and television', 'Theatre' and 'Other awards' and sorted them in a way that I thought made sense; hopefully it is not considered "poorly formated". If you approve of the version I created, you can edit this page's awards section and link my article as a main article. Felida97 (talk) 22:09, 28 January 2017 (UTC)
Looks better than what I would have done. Nice job. I'll trim down this article appropriately. Primefac (talk) 22:15, 28 January 2017 (UTC)

This evaluation is for my class

Not every fact is referenced with a reference, but those that are have reliable sources such as news articles, government documents and Playbills. There are also plenty of links to other Wikipedia articles. While everything is mostly relevant, the story about Lin-Manuel’s ancestors being an interracial couple and running away from slave laws was a little distracting. I also think that the section labeled Personal Life contains very little information about Miranda’s personal life, and focuses a lot on his Professional song-writing and appearances. The article is very neutral and does not praise nor demean Miranda, it merely states facts. From the citations I skimmed, there is no plagiarism or close paraphrasing. The citations are written in more dramatic language while the wikiarticle is very too the point. The information is all up to date since Miranda is a relatively recent phenomenon. I would have liked to see more about his social activism in issues relating to Puerto Rico and feminism.Whitlesj3134 (talk) 02:52, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

Lead sentence

Following the guidelines at WP:BLPLEAD, a person should be described as reliable sources commonly describes him. Please show what reliable sources commonly describe Mirada as before reverting. Also, will the person who keeps on reverting, please at least edit so that the lead sentence and the info box are consistent. Thank you. LK (talk) 08:10, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

The Tony's have described him as an actor when they nominated him twice for the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical. A single Tony nomination is enough to prove notability for an actor. Also, his own website describes him as an actor [1]. If that's not enough for you, just Google it and I'm sure that you'll find dozens of sources referring to him as an actor. JDDJS (talk) 10:19, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

[2] [3] [4]

Do you have a source that calls him a playwright? JDDJS (talk) 14:59, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

Another problem is that the version you keep reverting to calls him a "rapper". Did he win 2 tonys for being a rapper as well? And, the version you revert to is inconsistent between the lead sentence and the info box. At the least, you should edit that to fix it, not just keep reverting. The rule for BLPs is that contentious material should be not included unless it is supported by a reliable course. I find it highly unlikely that reliable sources regularly call him a rapper. Please support your contention that Miranda is commonly called a 'rapper' before reverting. Please also note that there is a brightline policy against reverting called the 3-revert rule. I believe you have already broken this rule. Please read WP:3RR. I suggest you do not revert again. LK (talk) 15:15, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

I don't claim to be innocent of edit warring, but you're just as guilty as me.

I know of no rule that the infobox and lead must be identical. Plenty of articles have different things listed in lead and infobox. JDDJS (talk) 15:30, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

Very clearly, Miranda is an "actor", having acted in major works and having won major acting awards. -- Ssilvers (talk) 17:58, 13 June 2017 (UTC)
100% support the notion that Miranda is an actor. Twice Tony nominated, and also about to star in a leading role in disneys new Mary Poppins.Mark E (talk) 19:00, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

We really should also say "singer", as he has numerous singing and recording credits for the shows and cast albums, Encores! concerts, Disney movie, Star Wars movie, TV appearances and others. -- Ssilvers (talk) 21:18, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

I'm not at all against including singer. Feel free to add it. JDDJS (talk) 10:05, 14 June 2017 (UTC)

I think w may have to call for a RFC on this. Before we go further, I'd like to point out some things from the policy for the lead, WP:BLPLEAD.

The lead sentence should describe the person as he or she is commonly described in reliable sources. ... avoid overloading the lead paragraph with various sundry roles; instead, emphasize what made the person notable ... In general, a position, activity, or role should not be included the lead paragraph if: a) the role is not otherwise discussed in the lead (per MOS:LEAD, don't tease the reader), b) the role is not significantly covered in the body of the article, or, c) the role is auxiliary to a main profession of the person (e.g. do not add "textbook writer", if the person is an academic).

If, after considering this, there is still support for adding singer to the lead sentence, let's call for an RFC. LK (talk) 19:52, 16 June 2017 (UTC)

From MOS:BLPLEAD: "The lead sentence should describe the person as he or she is commonly described in reliable sources. The notable position(s) or role(s) the person held should usually be stated in the opening paragraph. However, avoid overloading the lead paragraph with various sundry roles; instead, emphasize what made the person notable". It does not say that it should only include roles described in reliable sources. It says include notable roles. Lin's singing career is notable on its own. Two albums he has sung extensively on have won Grammys (Hamilton and In the Heights) and three albums he has sung on have appeared in the top five of Billboard 200 (Mixtappe at #1, Hamilton at #3 and Moana at #2). And since you're so concerned with the wording that sources use to describe him, here's one that calls him a singer: [5]. You can never have too many editors involved in a discussion, so feel free to start a RFC, but you're opposition to it being in the lead is ridiculous and not based in policy. JDDJS (talk) 22:43, 16 June 2017 (UTC)
Do we have any reliable sources (not copied from Wikipedia) calling him a singer? As far as I can tell, he is credited as songwriter, and doesn't have a major role as a singer himself, on those albums that you speak of. If no source can be produced that refers to him as a singer, I'm removing the designation. LK (talk) 03:59, 5 July 2017 (UTC)
It's pretty clear that the cite used to support "singer" is to a not very reliable source [6] that copied from Wikipedia itself. Again, if no reliable source is offered, I will remove "singer" soon, as it is unsupported by reliable sources. LK (talk) 05:04, 9 July 2017 (UTC)

What do reliable sources say?

I just did a search for "Lin-Manuel Miranda MacArthur Foundation" to see how reliable sources refer to him when covering the announcement of the MacArthur Foundation fellowship. Here are the top 10 results:

The following are the terms used to refer to Miranda: Playwright, Writer, Creator, Author, Performer, Actor, Star, Composer, Lyricist. Note that none of the sources refers to him as "singer" or "rapper". LK (talk) 05:28, 9 July 2017 (UTC)

Right now, you are the only editor who has ever had any problem with singer in the lead. If you have such an extreme problem with it in the lead, then you can go ahead and start an RFC. However, currently there is no consensus whatsoever to remove it from the lead, so until/unless a new consensus is formed to remove it, singer should remain in the lead. JDDJS (talk) 13:58, 9 July 2017 (UTC)

I disagree with using "singer" to be honest. The curent version - "American composer, lyricist, playwright, and actor" covers the singing roles as his main notability for actually singing would be in his acting roles for hamilton and in the heights. Mark E (talk) 19:56, 21 July 2017 (UTC)
I'm sorry to disagree, but that's not true: There is his singing on major soundtracks (Moana, Star Wars), two Encores! concerts, his singing for Sesame Street, singing on awards shows, and his single recordings, including "Love Make the World Go Round", in addition to his Broadway cast albums. The MacArthur Foundation sources above are not relevant: they pre-date most of these singing credits. -- Ssilvers (talk) 21:30, 21 July 2017 (UTC)
I have to reluctantly concur with LK on this one. Under WP:NOR, WP never leads, it follows. Which means there is always going to be an annoying delay between a person's accomplishments and when they show up in reliable sources and in turn can be put on Wikipedia. --Coolcaesar (talk) 15:21, 23 July 2017 (UTC)
