Currency Images[edit]

I have a collection of Liberian currency, both historical and current. As soon as I take the time to photograph them I intend to add them to this article in a manner similar to the article on United States dollar. Alan J Shea 06:09, 8 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Exchange Rate[edit]

Is the value of this currency floating or is it pegged to the American Dollar? As of 2006 May 12 the exchange rate is still exactly 1.00 USD = 49.00 LRD. Just wondering.

It floats pretty well on its own. As of March 2010 it was 72:1 (LRD72=USD1). Two years ago it was around 60:1. A fairly good gauge is the price of a bottle of Coca-Cola: At the end of 2004 it was LD$15, LD$20 in May 2008 and LD$25 in March 2010. =) -- Alan (talk) 18:33, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Commemoratives[edit]

Does anybody have a good source about all the Liberian dollar commemoratives produced for the U.S. market? Is it unusual, or do other countries do the same thing for other currencies? —MJBurrage^(T•C) 13:51, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It isn't unheard of for certain private mints to make contracts with governments to produce commemorative coins denominated in their currency. Examples include the prodigious output of the Pobjoy Mint for the Isle of Man. In the case of Liberia, what was perhaps unusual was that it was going on during the civil war, thus supporting whichever side the mint had made the deal with. The only source I can recomend is the latest edition of the "Standard Catalog of World Coins" by Krause and Mishler.
