Place of death?[edit]

So, did Knute Nelson die in Alexandria, Minnesota, as it says in the text? Or did he die in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, as it says in the infobox?

Or neither? The Minnesota Historical Society's death certificate index[1] says a Knute Nelson died in Polk County, Minnesota (perhaps Crookston, Minnesota) on 26 Jun 1923, but that differs from the 28 April dod given here; Alexandria is in Douglas County and may well have been his place of last residence. Maybe the Alexandria place of death came from confusion with a different Knute Nelson who died near there also in 1923? Or perhaps the 28 April date came from a different Knute Nelson who died in Pennsylvania? Gene Nygaard 09:39, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

According to the biography Norwegian Yankee, he died on the train en route from Washington, DC to Alexandria, right after they passed through the Timonium railroad station. (It says they passed through Timonium a little after 8 pm, and he died at 8:15 pm). From what I can tell, the train simply continued to his home town and his burial. --Leifern 20:56, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Quality assessment[edit]

This is a bit of a long-term project for me, and I obviously welcome other participants. Most of the material so far is drawn from the biography Norwegian Yankee, but I am trying to cross-reference and supplement from other sources, notably the New York Times and other sources I can find in sources.google.com. What needs to be done to complete this article and bring it to at least GA status is:

  1. Finish the chronology of his Senate years to his death
  2. A bit more on his personal life - nothing the least bit scandalous here, but through a series of unfortunate events, he left no successors
  3. More on his legacy - Norwegian Yankee has one point of view, but we obviously shouldn't uncritically accept it. Nelson's career spanned several political eras and touched on several important political issues that he either formed or that formed him. This will take time to work out but will probably form a good contribution to the political account in WP of the time he was active. --Leifern (talk) 02:43, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
