Orphaned references in Glen Jacobs

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Glen Jacobs's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Glenn Jacobs or Glen Jacobs?

The following is a closed discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the proposal was Google counts can be misleading, and no other reliable sources were provided by those who favor keeping it at "Glen", despite several, including a Federal campaign contribution form. Moreover, a misspelling of someone's name doesn't constitute a "common name", it's just a mistake. So, Move to "Glenn". Stage name? You mean Kane? That request has been shot down many times. This is a correction to his actual name, an error that was made who knows when by who knows who, who likely having been verbally told that his name was Glenn, simply misspelled it - as Glen may be a more common spelling for people named either Glen or Glenn.   • Comment. This discussion was started because I was asked to correct the spelling of his name on Wikipedia by someone who said it was wrong. Being diligent, I looked into it and at first saw the same contradictory information that everyone has indicated, so I simply asked the question, does anyone know what his real name is? Later I found his campaign contributions to Ron Paul, from the article about him endorsing Ron Paul. Now it is no longer doubtful, and it is clear that anyone who has used Glen does not know how his name is actually spelled, which is Glenn, and that is what the article should say.   • Comment, a Google search for "Glenn Jacobs" WWE gets 2,710 hits, while a search for "Glen Jacobs" WWE gets 36,300. The latter search on Google News also gets results from Miami Herald, SLAM Wrestling, MTV.com, movie reviews, Seattle Times, etc. Since there are reliable sources for both spellings we should keep the most common of the two, which appears to be "Glen".     I would not call anyone who misspells someones name a reliable source, because by definition they have made an error, and demonstrated their unreliability. Bear in mind that some of the hits are not referring to the wrestler, but a character in a novel, Glen Jacobs Callaway, which was apparently a combination of Glenn Jacobs and Mark Calaway, and published by the WWE. Since it is fiction, they apparently deliberately took an n off of Glenn and added an l to Calaway. You can add a note at the end of the article that his name has often been misspelled, but that should not appear in the lead section, as it would only add confusion. Please bear in mind that people actually use encyclopedias to learn factual information. Encyclopedias, magazines, books, newspapers can never change a persons name. Only that person can do that. The only question at hand is what is that persons real name? I maintain that it is undeniably Glenn Jacobs. Prior to December I had never heard of Glenn Jacobs or Kane. I was asked to change his name on Wikipedia because it was spelled wrong. His common name is Kane, his real name is Glenn. Kane is used for all his approximately 250 movie and TV credits, never Glenn or "Glen" (plus a few early ones for Diesel and his other wrestling names). IMDb has also been notified that they have misspelled his name and will be corrected as well. Just a comment, it has to be embarrassing to be a writer for a local newspaper (the Knoxville News Sentinel) to "authoritatively" (and incorrectly) state "The Insider would have loved to have seen Jonathan go up against Kane, who, in reality, is Jefferson County resident Glen Jacobs." Introductory section

The recent week-by-week additions by various editors regarding the Kane-Kelly Kelly storyline - to both this article and the Kelly Kelly page - has been frustrating for many editors. It has for me, too, given the policy of no week-by-week. However, it has got me to thinking about the introduction of the Glenn Jacobs article for some reason (don't ask what the correlation is).

I think the introduction should include something to the effect that Jacobs has wrestled using the Kane gimmick for 11 years, and the various storylines used revolving around the Kane character - that is, his relationships with his family (including most famously, his "half-brother" The Undertaker), his physical appearance, his mental stability, being the target of ridicule, and relationships with women.

Yes, I know that "unrequited love" would be one aspect of the "relationships with women" part, and invite possible week-by-week contributions by various editors (given the current Kane-Kelly Kelly angle), but remember those other storylines involving women (e.g., Lita and "Katie Vick").

To me, a good Wikipedia article requires an introduction that gives us an idea of what the article is going to be about. Yes, championships and other accomplishments are definitely important to include in the introduction of an article like this, but so is - in this case, and I'm sure a number of other professional wrestler articles - a brief overview of Jacobs' "Kane" gimmick, his best known.

Spanish vs American

I saw that this had been changed back and forth a few times, so I wanted to discuss it. Although Jacobs was born in Spain, he is American if his parents were American. Furthermore, if he was born in the hospital on the Air Force base in Spain, I believe that is still considered American soil. Somebody who knows more about the Air Force can correct me if I am wrong about that. The source provided doesn't specify exactly what his ethnicity is, so anybody who can provide some evidence either way...please do. Nikki♥311 20:46, 15 February 2009 (UTC)

Fake Diesel

I've tried adding some notation that Jacobs is known to many fans as "Fake Diesel," not just as "Diesel." Both times my edits were reverted. If you look at the first reference next to the "Diesel" line in the infobox, it gives one of Kane/Jacobs' aliases as "Fake Diesel." Additionally, Fake Diesel is a redirect to Glenn Jacobs.

  • I'm not sure about replacing it, but if he was officially introduced as 'Fake Diesel' then you can certainly add it. I don't think what people are known to as fans would count as a ring name to list on the infobox if that's all it was though. We have a separate section in their description to list nicknames which this could be included as if we have a reference for popular fan usage of 'fake Diesal' though. Even if he was an imposter, if he was officially introduced as Diesel then it does need to remain in the infobox (the same as Mark-swoggle belongs in Mark Henry's)

Billed from Hell

Why does the article say Kane is billed from hell? The ring announcers never awknowledge an actual place, and I've seen him being listed from 'Parts Unknown' many times in WWE video games, WWE magazine, other sources, etc. Tommyferrellhc08 (talk) 06:16, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

  • I'v heard 'Parts Unknown' used for the Ultimate Warrior, are you sure they repeated that usage for Kane? Seems kind of unoriginal. In either case sources are needed. They don't bill location much on live TV anymore so it might be necessary to go back to earlier viewings. Let's hope they show it this October during the vintage Halloween specials. Bruiser Mastino in WCW

Why isn't this covered? Yeah yeah Hallick... sure Mick Hallick used the name in ECW, but Hallick is an obese, shorter man with strong facial hair. Watch Jacobs' match as Mastino against Sting in WCW, it's simply Glen Jacobs. There's no debate. Hallick is a different guy. They do call it the chokeslam from Hell very often - can recall JR and several others calling it that whenever Kane delivers it, perhaps because his chokeslams are more effective and powerful than Taker's. Black Knight

If you look at the article for wrestler Jeff Gaylord, it is stated that some sources claim that Gaylord was the Black Knight at Survivor Series 1993 and that other sources claim that Kane was the Black Knight at Survivor Series 1993. References are given which support both claims. However, in the Kane article, it is unequivocally stated that Kane was the Black Knight with no references to the conflicting sources. For the sake of consistency and listing appropriate sources, shouldn't this portion of Kane's article be modified so that it reads more like the portion of Gaylord's article that discusses the identity of the Black Knight? 173.28.87.109 (talk) 01:34, 16 October 2009 (UTC)Ryan

Undertaker "vegetative state" storyline

Ok, whoever wrote this piece wrote it like a piece of "cr*p". I mean, you can at least check your spellings/ grammar, form complete sentences and provide sources. For example, "vegetative" is slept as "vegative". The section ends with "It is rumoured that Kane is getting a major push. Since that was questioned and was asked by the WWE fan-base for a long time now." - you probably wanted to keep it one sentence instead of two (just put a comma instead of the full-stop/ period before since) - however, what is the source for this that its a part of a major push for Kane and its because the WWE fan base has questioned it for a long time? However, since ECW's finale, references to ECW aren't made anymore on programming. Professional wrestling is not a sport. There is no authoritative or governing body in professional wrestling. Pro Wrestling Illustrated is only a magazine publication. It holds no power of official recognition over the championships of a promotion. WWE recognized the ECW title to be a world heavyweight championship throughout its existence until the discontinuation of the brand, which resulted in all references pertaining to ECW being removed from WWE programming soon thereafter. However as noted above, this is called retconing and it is something Wikipedia policy prohibits in this scenario for the purpose of historical accuracy. The WCW World Championship became an active world title in WWE when WCW folded.   • The wording is off but the three titles (WWE ECW and World) were sanctioned by WWE during Kane's reigns. Big Show's WCW title reign was not as it occurred in WCW. Now with the WCW and WWE titles being merged it isn't the same situation as with the Unified WWE Tag Team Championship, where both titles are essentially active and new champions are recognized in the histories of both the World Tag Team title and WWE Tag Team title.
  • With the WCW and WWE title unification all further champions are essentially recognized by the promotion under the WWE title's history. So while it is true that there have actually been a total of 5 world championships ever sanctioned by WWE (WWE, ECW, WCW, World, and WWF World Martial Arts Heavyweight Championship) with 2 of those (ECW and WCW) originating in separate promotions, they have each been sanctioned by WWE in different periods of time. (WWE and WWFMA during the 80s, WWE and WCW in 2001, WWE and World in 2002-Present , WWE, ECW and World in 2006-2010)

Tombstone - Adopted from The Undertaker

Why is the Tombstone tagged with 'Adopted from The Undertaker'? Everything about Kane IS ADOPTED from The Undertaker, his entire moveset(except for the occasional dropkick and enziguiri) and mannerisms(especially the manner in which they no-sell, by sitting up) are all adopted from The old 1990s Undertaker. So with that in mind, can we just remove that label? You're missing the point, everything about Kane is based on The Undertaker of old, his entire moveset is a carbon copy(except for the occasional dropkick and enziguri), the flying lariat for example was one Taker's signature moves aback in his earlier days, the chokeslam and tombstone combination, in fact his original finisher was the tombstone, his mannerisms like no-selling with the 'deadman' sit-up, that's from the Undertaker too, his entrance taunt in which he summons flames and rids off the red lighting are in contrast to Old-School UT's lightning and blue lighting, so my point is that either every move and theatrical taunts that Kane does gets tagged with 'adopted from The Undertaker' or that we rid off the - Adopted from The Undertaker - tag. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 111.68.59.72 (talk) 14:07, 10 January 2011 (UTC)

Vandlism on the Page

User:76.19.209.206 has added a section about Masked Kane returning in 2011, this isn't true and he didn't add a link to prove it. Vince McMahon said that the Kane character has gone as far as it could go under the Mask. On ECW once, it said he was From Death valley.

"Fake" Diesel (infobox)

  • I've altered the infobox to display Jacobs' former gimmick as simply Diesel and removed the internal link to Kevin Nash. Reasons:
  1. Jacobs was billed by WWF as Diesel, not "fake Diesel" or any variation thereof.
  2. Diesel is a character owned by WWE. Jacobs' infobox should not link to the bio of another individual to portray the character (cf. Steve Keirn's infobox linking to Doink the Clown rather than Matt Bourne). To reiterate, Glenn Jacobs portrayed Diesel - he did not portray Kevin Nash.

    • I do think that while fake might not be the word to use, it's worth pointing out that he was an imposter version of Diesel within the infobox. While he may not have been billed as such, it was an obvious point within the storyline that these were not the original people that portrayed the character first. In the case of Doink, changing the person portraying it was not done to prove a point or create a storyline. It was a matter of convenience for the WWF. So there's a bit of difference in the reasoning. Regarding the second point made, I can go either way. Initially, I left the hyperlink there because if someone unfamiliar with the subject wonders what Diesel is to begin with, they can follow the link to Kevin Nash, who played the original version, and see why Jacobs was the "fake" one. Kane's basic attack was always a normal Uppercut. Please add the Uppercut to his signature moves in case I'm wrong that he's not using and here are the sources in case I'm right:

Unabomb or Unibomb

I am wondering if we could find a reliable source to solve this spelling issue.

The template currently says "Mike (Unabomb)" but it references his OWOW profile at http://www.onlineworldofwrestling.com/profiles/k/kane.html

This spells it with an I on the top-right and once within:

Unibomb (SMW)
April 7, 1995 – Bluegrass Brawl III: Al Snow and Unibomb defeated The RockNRoll Express in a “Coal Miner’s Glove on a Pole” match to win the tag team titles.

But then it spells it with an A in the Smokey Mountain Wrestling section 23 times.

Since OWW is not consistent about this, I am wondering if we could acquire some official SMW documents or maybe just footage where they might spell his name on screen to affirm the proper spelling?

Knowing where "Mike" was associated with this would also be interesting.

The sources are seriously lacking in the the "Personal life" section. These sources fall below standard for biographies of living people. Per WP:BLP:

Contentious material about living persons (or, in some cases, recently deceased) that is unsourced or poorly sourced – whether the material is negative, positive, neutral, or just questionable – should be removed immediately and without waiting for discussion.[2] Users who persistently or egregiously violate this policy may be blocked from editing. Here is what I found so far:
  • IMDB is not a reliable source in the first place - it is edited by anybody - and this sentence does not reflect what the source says anyway - remove sentence and source (see revision history).
  • National Ledger is not a reliable source WP:RS and is not useful for covering subject's politics per WP:BLPSOURCES - it is a gossip publication - high quality sources are required for WP:BLP (see revision history)
  • Free State Project [26] is a newsletter lacking editorial oversight for qualifying as a reliable source. Also, the link goes to the home page (or whatever) and I was unable to find any mention of Kane. In any case, a better source is needed.
  • Mises [27] was I don't know what, but the account is closed and it probably lacked editorial oversight.
  • YouTube [28] is not a reliable source, and I think this is well known.
And I removed the related content, because content in a Wikipedia article about a living person is supposed to be stringently backed up. I removed the "Bluehost, Page Not Found" source but left the content - the next source might be OK. It is not actually a reliable source per se, but it is a real estate magazine covering Kane as a real estate agent, so I'm going to give that a pass. Sorry about this. Infobox Picture

Jacobs is now a politician running a serious campaign. If any of his potential voters become curious and search for him on Wikipedia, they'll see a guy in a hideous monster mask. Considering that he has also wrestled without his mask, and with different masks, I think it would be fair to change his infobox photo to a maskless one (perhaps this one: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Glenn_Jacobs_by_Gage_Skidmore_2.jpg). Prior to his election, I don't think wikipedia should be a part in the promotional effort toward his election. The selection of the picture is part of the wikipedia voice. He has been known as Kane with the "hideous monster mask" for an extended career. If he is successful in getting elected, as with all notable subjects, he will have to surpass his previous known identity with the new role. We should discuss that later. I get your point, and I thought of it myself, but Wikipedia also has a responsibility to not be damaging to real people's lives or political prospects. That's why, for example, there was such a long debate over which Donald Trump picture WP should use, even when it may have seemed insignificant whether he was smiling or not. Wikipedia exists to help people, and if it's damaging to a living person's reputation I believe that goes against policy here. Additionally, the current picture doesn't really tell us anything. It shows us what his mask looks like, but you don't see an actual image of his uncovered face until fairly far down, and even that is unclear and covered by makeup.
