Untitled[edit]

The New Zealand Herald recently had an article concerning the possible construction of a steam electric power plant in Kaipara Harbour along the Wellsville shoreline. If anyone is interested in learning about possible environmental effects related to such a power plant including its thermal discharge, entrainment of fish eggs and larvae, and possible distributions of anti-fouling compounds and their bi-products within the Harbour, and how these problems might be studied beforehand please contact:

Area of Kaipara Harbour[edit]

is quoted as 530 sq km or 330 mi (not sq mi) - but 530 sq km is about 200 (not 330) sq mi. What is the correct area??

Te Ara gives it as 500 sq km, so I'll change it to that so it's referenced. That doesn't mean the original figure of 530 sq km is wrong, since measurements of a bay are going to change depending on whether you take high- or low-water figures, and I imagine the mudflats would change a bit over the years too.-gadfium 07:52, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The area, the shoreline, and the channel[edit]

The Wikipedia article currently states that Kaipara Harbour has an area of 500 sq km and a shoreline of 3,200 km. The citation given for this is Te Ara - the Encyclopedia of New Zealand. Te Ara, in turn, seems to base its figures on Encyclopædia Britannica (or is it the other way round?) So here we have three distinguished encyclopædias all attesting that the area is 500 sq km and the coastline is 3,200 km long, and indeed these figure are quoted all over the web.

It is a curious figure, this coastline, given the area it encloses. It means that if you were to walk around the shoreline you would cover a distance equal to travelling the length of New Zealand and back. A casual look at the map suggests this is maybe a little exaggerated, even allowing for the convolutions of the Kaipara coastline. Still, given the fractal nature of coastlines, any length is possible. Anyway, I have replaced the values for both the area and the perimeter with those given by Heath in his 1975 paper.

I also wonder about the uncited figure of 4 km given for the width of the harbour entrance. If you check around the web, you will find values from 4 km to 9 km. But if you go to Google Earth and use the "length" tool, you can measure it for yourself. It is 6 km. So have changed that figure too, and added a citation. --Geronimo20 (talk) 10:11, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
