Josu Jon Imaz San Miguel, born in Zumárraga (Gipuzkoa) on 6th September 1963. Married with three children, resident in Donostia (Gipuzkoa).

Holder of a Doctorate in Chemistry from the University of the Basque Country. Holder of a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry from the Science Faculty in Donostia. Winner of the special final-year course prize. Specialist in polymers. Trained in general business management in academic year 1989-1990 as part of the General Management Training Plan of Ikasbide – Mondragón Co-operative Group. Doctoral thesis completed at the Higher College of Industrial Engineering in Bilbao (1994).

Seconded by the INASMET technology centre to the French centre CETIM in Nantes in December 1986 under a grant from the Ministry of Industry and Energy as part of its programme for training researchers abroad.

Head of the Composites & Polymers Area of INASMET from 1987 to 1989. Recruited by the Mondragón Co-operative Group in 1989-1991 as an industrial promoter. Head of the Department of Marketing and Foreign Relations of INASMET 1991-1994.

Elected as a Member of the European Parliament in June 1994, which post he held until 7th January 1999, when he was appointed Basque Government Minister of Industry, Trade & Tourism and Basque Government Spokesman. Re-elected as Basque Government Minister of Industry, Trade & Tourism and Basque Government Spokesman by a Basque Cabinet meeting on 17th July 2001. He held these posts until 13th January 2004.

Elected Chairman of the Euzkadi Buru Batzar (National Executive Committee) of the Basque Nationalist Party at the party’s General Assembly on 17th-18th January 2004.
