James Evans Whitney, primarily a pitcher for early national league teams. As a 1881 Boston rookie, he led in innings (552), wins (31) and complete games (57). Two years later he won 37, led the league with 345 strikeouts while walking 35, and batted clean-up for the league champs. He died at age 33, but despite tuberculosos'(consumption)increasing toll completed 377 of 399 career starts. He was inducted into the Binghsmton NY (Mets) Stadium Hall of Fame in 1998.
