Early talk

Jessica Alba is now dating her female costar

"Jessica Alba has been acting on screen for more than half her life, dating back to a small role as Gail in the 1994..." She's 24. 1994-2005 is 11 years. That is less that half of her life. Remove or rephrase. 81.178.71.127 10:22, 17 Apr 2005 (UTC)

You know, you could have [updated] this yourself. I'll take care of it, but you better check your math as she's 23, not 24. CryptoDerk 14:31, Apr 17, 2005 (UTC)

How accurate is "Jessica grew up a sports fanatic and terrorized her teachers and grandparents alike with her rebellious behavior"? Alba has said she rebelled against her parents by becoming a born-again Christian in her youth. MK2 19:31, 8 Jun 2005 (UTC)

"She is now dating Tal from IGN"

Does anyone have a source for this? Seems like a joke and I can't find anything to corroborate that statement. If nobody can produce a source I'm going to remove it. Isotope23 1 July 2005 12:48 (UTC)

I'm unhappy with this type of section in any biographical article. Some "relationships" are clearly essential to understanding a person's life story, but then they should fit into the main article, with some intelligent reflection on their importance. Split off, the list of who a person has presumably slept with is dehumanizing. It also seems rather sadistic and prejudiced to post such lists. Some people's work is shown in public; that's the nature of their work, and it doesn't negate their right to some privacy. It seems like a throwback to when actors were considered as prostitutes--people whom society tells us are fair game for any

abuse, and are always to be blamed for their own misfortunes. Or maybe we as a culture have never really gotten past that stage. In any case these listings say far more about the dirty little minds of whoever compiles them than they say about the actual subject of the article. DSatz July 8, 2005 15:47 (UTC)

I agree. Having a whole section dedicated to her relationships, presented without the barest hint of context, just seems unencyclopedic. I went ahead and deleted it from the current revision. — EagleOne\Talk 22:10, July 10, 2005 (UTC)
What's the old motto? Honi soit qui mal y pense. I don't think any reasonable person is going to think less of a 24 year old woman because she's had three boyfriends. And maligning other people when there's no evidence is patronizing at best. MK2 06:32, 18 July 2005 (UTC)

You guys should add Good Luck Chuck to her film roles

Her ethnicity and nationality

Ok, I've lost count of the number of times that her ethnicity and nationality have been changed in the past few weeks. Can we come to a consensus on this? It shouldn't be to hard to look up her biography online. IMDb says that she was born in California, which makes her an American citizen. Does she have citizenship in Canada or Mexico? — EagleOne\Talk 01:34, July 19, 2005 (UTC)

  • As far as I can tell, she's a native-born American citizen who's resided in the United States her entire life. Both of her parents were American citizens as well. So I don't see any way she could be considered a Canadian or Mexican citizen. (I found an interview where a Canadian fan asks her about her Canadian ancestry and she said one of her grandmothers was from Montreal - she surely would have mentioned any Canadian citizenship.)
  • Her mother is of Danish, French Canadian, English and Italian ancestry. Her father is of Mexican, American Indian, and Spanish ancestry. So calling Jessica Alba a Mexican or a Canadian is quite a stretch. MK2 06:00, 20 July 2005 (UTC)
Maybe you guys should disregard her "ethnicity" seeing that she doesn't really identify herself as a ______-American in any known articles I've read. She's just an American citizen like Lindsay Lohan, Hilary Swank, and Britney Spears. Why the need to dwell on her ancestrial roots??? Is she inadequate because she doesn't look white enough?--71.132.20.138 23:24, 4 March 2006 (UTC)
People like trivia. It's interesting to try to answer questions about her name and appearance through ethnic roots. No one is "purely" American. If you looked up an article about Natalie Portman, it would say she's Israeli. Lohan's article says she's of Irish Italian heritage. Spear's article says she has English heritage. Additionally, Alba's ambiguous ethnic roots have even been joked about (see: Family Guy), which suggests people care, or at least notice. Loodog 20:57, 7 March 2006 (UTC)
Huh? People like trivia. That is as illogical and nongermaine explanation for anything as I have ever heard, as is "No one is 'purely' American". I'll contradict that right now: I am damn-well purely American, and nothing else whatsoever, and proud of it. My ancestors came from a multitude of different locations overseas, and some of my ancestors were waiting here already for the rest of them to arrive. Furthermore, if a person is Cherokee, or Iroquis, Sioux, or Navajo, etc., that is as purely American as it is conceivable for anyone to be. So, please learn not how to spout balderdash.
All references to Jessica's so-called "ethnic background" should be ERADICATED. D.A.W. The preceding unsigned comment was added by Dale101usa (talk • contribs) 20:11, March 7, 2006 (UTC)
Damn, you seem to have a seriously psychological problem about racial heritage. I recommend a few sessions with a shrink. Seriously. Your reaction simply isn't normal. Most people are actually proud of what they might be, not embarrassed. The USA is a country of immigrants of many countries and races, no one is an "American" by race of ethnic background, but from whence they came - Most are proud of it, not embarassed of it 85.138.0.158 23:11, 11 August 2006 (UTC).
There's no such thing as "racial heritage". It's a proven fact that there aren't any racial divisions within the human species. Ethnic divisions, to be sure, but these are almost entirely cultural and have little or nothing to do with biology. With that in mind any native-born American who claims that they're American is indeed an American. That's the ethnicity and that's where the discussion should end. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 221.145.53.186 (talk) 08:05, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
As the user who initially brought this up for discussion, I feel as though I should make my intentions clear. I don't care about trivia, and I don't give a damn what she or anyone else wants to call one's self. I simply wanted to make this article as accurate as possible. I simply wanted to bring to a stop the string of edits that seemingly changed her background on a daily basis (see [1], the first in a series of edits by anon users). In that regard, I think we succeeded.
Finaly, people, let's try to stay civil. Lets not have any insults flying around here, nor any implied charges of racism. Those charges are unwarranted and unfounded. — EagleOne\Talk 14:19, 8 March 2006 (UTC)
Suffice it to say, information about Alba's nationality/ethnicity should be included because it is 1)true, 2)pertinent, and 3)interesting.Loodog 20:23, 9 March 2006 (UTC)
I removed these ethnicity categories, since, as MK2 and User:71.132.20.138 point out, they don't apply:
  • Category:Mexican American actors
  • Category:French Americans
  • Category:French Canadians
  • Category:Danish Americans Valrith 03:52, 30 December 2006 (UTC)
  • Well, I think something like this comes up because of her clear non-white looks. Not to mention the fact that she was picked to play the Invisible Woman in the Fantastic Four, who happens to be a blond haired, blue-eyed white woman in the comics. This more than caught a lot of people by surprise. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.235.81.39 (talkcontribs) 21:28, May 11, 2007

Her religion

Any cites on Alba being a Roman Catholic? I've read that she became a born-again Christian as a teenager. She no longer is, but did she convert (revert?) to Catholicism? MK2 15:22, 22 July 2005 (UTC)

  • I second that, I also read that. I guess she is until she's proven not to be. Haha, if anyone knows any journalists/reporters... be sure to get them to slip in the old "are you a Catholic question?". In her interview in GQ magazine she seemed pretty strongly Atheist, but I'd hardly call GQ the most credible information source on earth... - Greaser 06:41, 20 August 2005 (UTC)

All I know is that her parents were said to be Catholic on the September 21, 2005 edition of Access Hollywood. Nightscream 9.22.05. 7:37am EST.

Here is the source, my fellows, here is the source. I get most of my religion info from the NNDB anyway. Эйрон Кинни 04:46, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
I am certain that she's Catholic, but I don't think we should accept NNDB as a source. It's about as accurate as the IMDB, i.e. not very much. Like the IMDB, it's a second-hand source that has no direct contact with the person, i.e. like Wikipedia itself, so how do you know that they're right? Something like an interview, in-depth profile would be a first hand source, otherwise NNDB and IMDB and all sites like them are mistake-prone and should not be used as proof. Pictures

I got rid of the Dark Angel pic. While it is an important part of her career, the picture is far too dark and ugly to be posted in this article. I suppose it can be reinserted into the article with the new one but the article then becomes overburdened with pictures compared to any other content. --TJive 11:03, August 7, 2005 (UTC)

OCD Cat

Do we have a WP:CITEation for this? - brenneman(t)(c) 21:02, 9 January 2006 (UTC)

My reason for deleting the OCD category is simply that the requirements for the category state that there has to be a verifiable clinical diagnosis and not a case of the person saying about themselves to be a bit OCD about things. Of the two references in the article, the online source mentions her doing the latter; there's no clinical diagnosis mentioned. The other source, Jay Leno, I can't check, but it's more likely than not to be her talking about herself rather than a clinical diagnosis being shown; after all, it's a talk show. help needed with diseases section

I reverted some vandalism by User:Prof richards, and then noticed that he, and possibly others, have been inserting what appear to be random diseases into the part about illnesses Alba has had. I know nothing about Alba, but someone who does should try to sort this out. --Allen 06:39, 17 January 2006 (UTC) (time sig wrong here; I posted this several days before but forgot to sign it)

I removed some added by Jeff Malonie recently. I don't know for sure that they're false, but the list is already suspect, so any new additions should at the very least have an edit summary attached. I suspect that some of the ones that I've left on there are just jokes additions from past editors; again, someone who knows something about Alba should look these over. --Allen 06:39, 17 January 2006 (UTC)

Okay, since I was the first to add the initial bits about her childhood illnesses, let me list the ones that I added, which I derived from the issue of OK! magazine that I listed under References: Collapsed lungs. Frequent pneumonia. Burst appendix. Tonsil cyst. In addition, I added the bit about her Obssessive-Compulsive Disorder, which she stated on The Tonight Show, which is both mentioned in the article's body and listed under Reference.

This is what I did NOT add: Premature birth. Jaundice. Preterm learning disability. Escape from cerebral palsy. Proteinuria. Back spasms. Migraines. Asthma. Amoebiasis. Anorexia. Bulimia. Liver and Kidney infection.

I tried checking the three sources listed under External Links, to see if they corroborate any of this. Both the imdb and tv.com sites corroborate three of these illnesses: Her anorexia, her kidney infection, and her asthma. Of these three, she suffered two of them, the anorexia and the kidney infection, in 2001, NOT in her childhood, to which that section is devoted.

None of the three sites corroborate the remaining 10 conditions: premature birth, jaundice, learning disability, escape from cerebral palsy, proteinuria, back spasms, migraines, amoebiasis, bulimia, or liver infection. (I mean, it is even possible to have both anorexia and bulimia???)

Thus, I removed those ten conditions, and reworded the section to make clear that her anorexia and kidney infection occurred in 2001.Nightscream 10:18, 8 February 2006 (UTC).

It IS possible to have both anorexia and bulimia. I was editing her diseases section for accuracy when I encountered the fact that somebody before me had already done this. So I reverted to that previous sentence. Thanks. Mamacitalinda 03:03, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

Any sources confirming illnesses should be cited in the article, anywayLoodog 20:35, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

Someone reinstated all the unsourced childhood illnesses I deleted. I deleted them, though I did not reinstate the mentions of her 2001 anorexia and kidney infection, but moved those to the Personal Life section. Please do not reinsert that material unless you can cite sources for it. Nightscream 03:44, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

"ironically"?

In regard to the Playboy trivia:

"Ironically, she has appeared semi-nude in several other porn magazine publications."

That first word seems to me to violate NPOV, as it insinuates hypocrisy in the lawsuit. I move to change the sentence to:

"Alba has appeared semi-nude in several other magazine publications."Loodog 20:46, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

Though it should be pointed out that her nudity in those pictorials was of the "PG "concealed variety, and not the "R" unconcealed type. This is further reason why there is no irony, let alone hypocrisy. Nightscream 22:17, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

Her GQ photoshoot would be hard to classify as PG, i.e. suitable for 12 and unders if their parents explain it to them... -- Greaser 03:02, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

The word "ironically" should be banned from Wikipedia and only allowed in special circumstances (like explaining how overused it is) along with the words "now" and "currently". There are so many words best avoided to be remotely within the style of an Encyclopedia. -- Horkana 23:47, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

I have, with much regret, removed this section as not being per fair use. The playboy cover, to contrast, is supported by a bit of prose and is a semi-notable event in the article. So it's fair use, but the other was not. - brenneman {L} 13:11, 28 May 2006 (UTC)

Environmentalist, Lexus Hybrid?

I've searched the internets high and low (I googled) and can find no mention of Alba being an environmentalist or owning a Lexus Hybrid save those articles that are copied from this very wiki article. In such a celebrity-obsessed world, I find it hard to believe that this wouldn't be everywhere her name is. I'm removing this if no one has objections.--Loodog 05:27, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

Lexus Hybrid/prius?

In style magazine this month claims she has the lexus hybrid. its in the section matching stars and their cars. but yes, finding web links is darn hard for this one. only an indirect mention here. http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060927/OPINION03/609270311/1149/AUTO03 "SHE: You never seemed to be all that interested in hybrid vehicles until we watched the MTV Movie Awards this summer, and you got all googly-eyed over that actress Jessica Alba when she said, "Practice safe sex -- and drive hybrids, if you can."" course i didn't search very hard. so i'm sure its out there somwhere. --0roo0roo 13:52, 2 October 2006

Alba Topless Vis á Vis the religion section

Alba's most definitely done topless scenes in her early carreer, so why's it mentionend her relectancy to do nudity? Topless is already partial nudity, if anything isn't she merely referring to full frontal nudity? Sound kinda weird to take this as "conservative", even for Hollywood. 85.138.0.158 23:16, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Career section does not mention her lead role in Into The Blue. I'm not sure how to add a Film Wiki link, if someone could do that. In the fourth paragraph under Career, the following sentence appears: "Co-created by Cameron, Alba was the star in the series which ran for two seasons before being canceled in 2002." bizarre fixation with ethnicity

Why does anybody care about these quantum details of ethnicity? It's listed in the first line of her bio; it seems to me it ought to appear in the "trivia" section, if at all. Uucp

because people of mixed heritage that look stunning make for natural curiosity. they are not the norm and we do want to know how it happened. and race is still a real issue today. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 75.30.112.253 (talkcontribs) 22:06, October 2, 2006 (UTC)
First of all, there is no "bizarre fixation" with her ethnicity. It's mentioned once in the section on her early life. This question was settled long ago in an earlier discussion on this talk page. Second, her race is part of her identity, her background; thus its position early in the biography section, not in the trivia section as you suggest. There is no reason to not include it in the article. — EagleOne\Talk 17:00, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

The nudity clause

The article contradicts itself in the religion section, concerning her position on nudity. First it says that despite her no-nudity clause, "she claimed to had been willing to be fully nude in Sin City." Then, in the next paragraph, it says she was "given the option to appear naked" in Sin City, "but decided to pass up the offer." So which is it? --64.24.181.185 23:23, 26 October 2006 (UTC)

According to Rebecca Murray at Hollywood Movies, one of a number of reporters covering the same interview at a press conference:
Nudity was an Option: Alba’s comment on nudity being an option brought out a few loud moans from some male journalists who apparently would have loved to have had Robert Rodriguez go that direction. Alba was adamant that nudity was definitely negotiable, if that was how Rodriguez wanted to go. “It absolutely was an option. Robert said we could do it if we wanted to. Obviously it would have been more authentic. But I felt like dancing around with a lasso and chaps was going to be sexy enough. I think being nude for me would have been distracting. I really couldn’t be bottomless in front of my dad. He would really… I don’t know. He’d disown me or something. He’d freak out.”
This makes it sound like Rodriguez left it up to her, that she was open to it, but that ultimately she decided not to do it. --Brons 18:44, 11 December 2006 (UTC)

Tattoo Citation

Forgive me if I do this incorrectly, I'm new to this. But something that caught my eye is the description of a tattoo of a bow on Alba's lower back. This is cited with 8 and 9. First, 9 brings up a 404 NOT FOUND message. And 8 is a picture with an article where the author openly declares that he does not believe the person in the picture is Jessica Alba. Like I said, forgive me for newbieness...but I would think that's a bit unacceptable. Needs some actual verification to it. Unfortunately, I'm not really sure what to do about it. --Drummer0000 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Drummer0000 (talkcontribs) 06:48, November 23, 2006

  • I agree. The tattoo on her back as seen in these images could be just about anything. I'm going to remove the statement. Valrith 14:52, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

Measurements

The bra Jessica Alba wore in Sin City was put up for auction on eBay. The stated size was 34B which might be good enough as a citation for her measurements. However it looks as if it might have been intentionally too small and worn for the look rather than comfort and there are many statistics about how most women wear clothes which are not the right size for them and Jessica seems to be a much healthier looking weight now than when she was on Dark Angel so any measurements are going to be a bit vague. With a second citation from an alternative source it might be worth adding this information at some point. --Horkana 23:53, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

It's been in the article, with references, for at least a half day already. -- ArglebargleIV (talk) 03:38, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
