Extraneous Matter

I removed the text, which was about the Reading Terminal and Pennsylvania Convention Center and not Market East Station, but still may have use elsewhere:

The terminal and tracks leading to it sat unused from 1984 until the 1990s when it was converted into part of the Pennsylvania Convention Center. The elevated viaduct leading to it was deteriorating and had a negative impact on the surrounding community of Chinatown, and the section from Vine Street to the Convention Center has been replaced with a ramp for vehicle access.

Name Reference

An anonymous user recently changed the article to use the old Market East name as the primary self-reference within the article. I think these references should be reverted to the new name. Anyone with any opinion? HuffTheWeevil / talk / contribs 14:46, 9 September 2014 (UTC)

That user's edits seem to be based only on his own feelings. As long as SEPTA calls it Jefferson, so should we, unless some reliable source emerges to the contrary, like a newspaper article saying no one ever calls it anything but Market East. --Coemgenus (talk) 12:20, 10 September 2014 (UTC)

It's a bit of a conundrum. 90% of Philadelphians have no idea that Market East's name was officially changed, and most of those that do are still calling it Market East. Saw that firsthand today. If history is any guide, it will remain that way. Historical issues with Philadelphians not accepting the renaming of landmarks aside, the concern here is that Wikipedia has willfully become an extension of the paid advertisement system. In effect, Jefferson has also bought an (unpaid) advertisement on Wikipedia, by extension. In any case, if we're going to call Wiki entries purely by their official names, then please be sure to change 30th Street Station's name to William H. Gray III station - even though it's still showing as 30th Street at Amtrak.com. 1. There is no source that can verify that 90% of locals are unaware of the name change. You are basing your opinions on one, or a limited amount of, firsthand experiences. Remember, Wikipedia is all about the facts.

2. Anyone who is not aware of the name change can learn about it here. That's the very point of Wikipedia.

3. Your concerns about advertisement by extension is not a justifiable reason to not change Wikipedia to reflect the real world. The article is unbiased while referring to something by its proper name.

4. The 30th Street Station renaming is a bit different. First, it has been renamed to William H. Gray III 30th Street Station, not just William H. Gray III. Second, the name has not taken effect yet. When it does, we will certainly change it's respective Wikipedia article.

5. Your sarcastic comments are unnecessary. We encourage comments and opinions on Wikipedia, as long as they are respectful and mature. HuffTheWeevil / talk / contribs 04:34, 12 September 2014 (UTC)
