"Doctoral student"[edit]

In de Dutch system, a PhD candidate is not a "student". This was even confirmed by the supreme court. PhD candidates have a Mater of Science degree or equivalent, which implies that they have finished their studies. A PhD candidate employed by a university is an employee by law, since he is supposed to contribute to one of the legal tasks of a Dutch university: doing science.
