Not dead yet?[edit]

This article refers to him as recently deceased, and refers to murder. Though it will almost undoubtlessly be true by this time tommorow, he's not legally been declared dead yet, so I'm not sure it should make these claims. However, barring a miracle, I'm going to leave it as it is. Darksun 18:10, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Correct - he isn't dead and the machine is not going to be turned off until tomorrow. Yeah it's quite picky, but it's not right to say he's dead yet. violet/riga (t) 19:17, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Changed back to "is", since I think we shouldn't anticipate events, even ones that are virtually certain. For example, there could be some legal reason why the machine's switch-off is delayed for a day. 81.158.3.74 23:12, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
And now it'd been changed back to was (not by me though) - again, correctly. 81.158.2.226 14:47, 27 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
what a horrible act of violence! but, of course all murders are horrible acts of violence. --66.218.18.13 02:54, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Age?[edit]

Most sources say he was '47' so why is the birthdate given as '1961' instead of '1960'?

Also, 'brain-dead' is a misnomer invented in 1968 to discourage the use of life support for persons with no chance of recovering brain function.74.237.28.5 04:29, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You cannot simply change 1961 to 1960 like here saying that it must be 1960 because media reported he was 47. If he really was 47, his birthdate can be between July 1959 and July 1960. The sources which say he was 47 cannot be used to exactly determine a year of birth.
Some other sources which clearly say his date of birth:
And this blog, which is of course not a reliable source, but has an explanation:
Summary: You can either trust the sources which say he was 47, then it is impossible to make decision for either 1959 or 1960, or you can trust the sources which say an exact date, which is 10 June 1961. There is no source for 10 June 1960.

If someone were born in June and died in July 2007 at age 47, then they must have been born in 1960. Also, no explanation given for the age '47' given in multiple news reports.74.237.28.5 19:00, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Again:
  • Sources reported until ~27 July that he was 47.
  • None of these sources reported that he was born in June (June of any year, be it June 1960 or June 1961).
  • On 28 July, two newspapers (the one I have linked above) have reported that 1.) he was 46, 2.) he was born on 10 June 1961. These are The Daily Telegraph and The Times. These are really good newspapers.
  • One of these articles prints in bold: "James Oyebola, boxer, was born on June 10, 1961. He died on July 27, 2007, aged 46"
The most important point is that not a single source reported "47" and "June" together. Those which reported "47" did not mention a month or even an exact date at all.
I assume that the earlier reports are just wrong and superseded by the more recent ones. At that time it wasn't really important how old he is, people cared about whether he would survive. In any case, there is no way to write 10 June 1960 because it would be invented, there is no source that could be cited in order to prove it. The only sources which do mention a date at all are giving 10 June 1961. --217.232.148.133 22:29, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
