Conscientious objector

". . . [H]is tribunal exempted him only on the requirement to do non-combatant military service, which he refused." What does this mean? I clicked on the source to inform an edit, but the source was of no help. Was he exempted from combat on the condition that he serve in a non-combat role? --Kjorg23 (talk) 07:18, 3 November 2020 (UTC)

I agree - I actually came to this page today as a result of reading elsewhere that Mason had been a conscientious objector in the Second World War and wnanted to find out why this but there seems to be a lacuna in the article in this regard.Bedwasboy (talk) 16:54, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

The ODNB says he didn't actually manage to register as one:

His attempt to register as a conscientious objector was frustrated by a tribunal which directed him to non-combatant military service. His appeals against this ruling, however, became in the end irrelevant. After he and Pamela were married in 1941, he found that work in the film industry had been declared of national importance. As long as he worked in films his call-up would be deferred and he would remain a civilian.

Hi:

Architecture

Conscientious objector

During WWII, conscientious objectors were imprisoned, they did not star in movies, as far as I know. So what were the cicumstances that allow Mason to appear on the screen? Politis (talk) 17:16, 13 February 2011 (UTC)

He wasn't a conchy; he wasn't allowed to register as one. Film actors were part of the propaganda arm and exempted from military service. Lachrie (talk) 16:01, 22 March 2013 (UTC)

Personal life - rather scant

I just read that Mason screwed his biological children out of their inheritance by leaving it all to his messed-up second wife. When she died, they then had to fight for many years just to get their father buried. But none of them ever saw a penny of his estate. Considering he tired to avoid fighting the horrors of Nazism, and then hypercritically performing as members of the Third Reich in fictional works after the war, this would seem like a valid expansion of the guy's biography? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.161.148.120 (talk) 14:46, 5 February 2012 (UTC)

Hugo Drax role

I removed this bit because it was unreferenced. Furthermore, Roger Moore in a 2005 interview[1] was asked about Mason as Drax and said 'I never really knew much about the casting for Moonraker. I think it was decided quite early on that Michel would be cast though, as Cubby left London well in advance of Moonraker to set up residence in France. So James Mason's "involvement" was probably quite early on in the prep."

The bit in the article about Mason not turning down roles sounded like WP:Original research.

Awards section would be helpful

I came to view the James Mason page to briefly look at how many awards, or award nominations, he received through his career. One section I read could be isolated by high-lighting an awards section. Last film

Dr. Fischer, The Shooting Party, and The Assisi Underground all claim to be his last film. Accounting for filming time vs. airing time, only two can possibly be. I noticed that IMDB, the only cited source for the Dr. Fischer film, lists it as 1984 (used in the list here) but also gives a date of October 11, 1985, so there's an additional discrepancy there.
