Is it really true that the XJ350 changed width mid-run by nearly a foot?

No. All are 73.2" wide (without mirrors). Jaguar added a long wheel base (5" longer, but not wider) in 2005. Short = 200.4" Long = 205.3"

Adding DTC Codes[edit]

As cars become more complicated and use On Board Diagnostics (OBD), owners need an encyclopedia to look up reference codes and what they mean. The factories publish these lists, but when the cars get older, the older lists get dropped from the dealers' computer and the manufacturer places the lists in the public domain. OBD computers record fault or error codes when a sensor or a combination of sensors provide data that is outside the normal reference range. However, these codes are not necessarily reflective of the problem. For example, if an X350 battery drops below 12.1 Volts, it will continue to start the car, and the driver would have no idea it is weak, but the OBD computer would record multiple fault codes suggesting various components have failed to perform as expected. In fact, the components will be working normally, but the drop in voltage sends off error codes. Replacing the components will not fix the problem, but installing a new factory-spec battery will. The lists will provide information to the owner so they, or their mechanic, knows what to look for. - See Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Automobiles for a more detailed discussion starter.
