Untitled[edit]

Hi, the early British TV series of Robin Hood with Richard Greene as Robin featured an episode called 'Ireland's Eye' I don't know if WK allows for such trivia? zzapper 16:33, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If cited, and if it had some meaning beyond an episode name (if the island were a plot feature), maybe.SeoR (talk) 12:00, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ownership?[edit]

Who owns Ireland's Eye? I'm finding it very difficult to find this out and this article has no mention of ownership. 109.76.214.233 (talk) 17:12, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's probably a public park.Codyorb (talk) 18:35, 2 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It's treated as if it were public, but as far as is known locally, it belongs to the family (or rather, probably, their estate company) who still own Howth Castle and much of the "wild land" of Howth. No one is sure if the boats have some licensing arrangement, or just drop in. This is in stark contrast to Lambay, which is owned by a Revelstoke family trust, and has strictly controlled landing (none mostly, one local boatsman has occasional access to bring groups to see birds and so on, and otherwise the occasional group by prior arrangement). Mind you, Lambay was looking at some form of guesthouse arrangement for the Castle a few years back, though I've heard no mention of late - there was even an action taken by some of the many descended family members against the trust over this.SeoR (talk) 12:00, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

When was Ireland's Eye transferred to the county borough?[edit]

It seems that Ireland's Eye was transferred from Dublin County to Dublin County Borough some time between 1954[a 1] and 1970.[a 2] It was transferred back to the county in 1985 at the same time as Howth was,[a 3] but apparently it was not part of Howth urban district in 1942 when that was transferred to the city.

  1. ^ S.I. No. 298/1954 "County of Dublin (including the islands of Lambay and Ireland's Eye)"
  2. ^ S.I. No. 269/1970 "That part of the County Borough situated within a line ... together with the islands of Ireland's Eye, Thulla and The Steer ... "
  3. ^ Local Government (Reorganisation) Act, 1985 Schedule 1 (2) (1–2) "Parts of the City detached therefrom and added to the County by virtue of section 10 (1). ... The part of the City which comprises the island of “Ireland's Eye” and all its surrounding islets and rocks."

Interesting subtlety, so the island and rocks moved to the city distinct from the village and land district... I will enquire locally. SeoR (talk) 12:00, 31 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Building seen by satellite[edit]

There is a squarish building, which appears to lack a roof, in the central west part of the island (refer to coordinates below), but it is either unmentioned, or unclearly mentioned in the article. Anyone know what the structure is, or was used for? The text mentions “a” martello, and later “the” martello tower, one, the former, as being the only evidence of previous settlement, and another, the latter, as being constructed in the Napoleonic era. I can’t tell if this is one and the same structure, the latter being built upon the foundations (presumably) of the earlier structure; or if these are two separate structures. If they are two, then is the squarish ruin the first martello? It doesn’t (to my eyes) resemble one at all. I’m not an authority on such things, which is probably a good deal why I’m finding myself so confused. Any expert attempt to clear up what appears to be discrepancies (at least to me, and therefore possibly other non-experts) would be greatly appreciated.

Hamamelis: This YouTube video might help you. The Martello tower is at the north end of the island and the much smaller rectangular building in the central part of the island is the remains of the 8th-century church as mentioned in the article. As there are no sources to differentiate between Martello tower prose and suspect they refer to the same structure. This webpage mentions a round tower on the church roof which may be causing some confusion. I don't know anymore than that. ww2censor (talk) 16:51, 29 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

5x expanded by SeoR (talk). Self-nominated at 00:02, 20 November 2021 (UTC).[reply]

  • Article was a 5x expansion at the time of the nomination and no close paraphrasing was found. QPQ has been found. ALT0 is a bit too complicated and isn't as interesting as ALT1; however, the first part of ALT1 (it nothing to do with sight) appears to be synthesis as it's not actually explicitly mentioned in the article. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 03:56, 27 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    • Many thanks, and I understand - I was rushing a bit as I noticed DYK potential and then that it was the 7th day... I will address both, with a citation on one (I recall having a couple in mind, but perhaps not used in the end) and suggested tighter wording for the other, and will ping then. SeoR (talk) 20:48, 27 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the edits. I like ALT1a the best as it's closer to the article wording and also reads more like most hooks (I think using dashes in hooks is relatively uncommon), so let's go with that. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 10:42, 2 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Promoter's comment: I spent a solid 30 seconds trying to figure out what brass instrument ALT1a was talking about when it said "organ". I'm—quite tired. theleekycauldron (talkcontribs) (they/them) 07:02, 3 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Next steps[edit]

I have completed an expansion of this article, 12-19 November, but it still needs more: a) further detail on the birds, one of the main reasons for its notability (I can tackle this was the last document located yesterday), b) more on history, especially if anything at all can be found for the period 1235-1803, c) an update on plan progress and any other recent changes, d) supply of on-island pictures. Other ideas also welcome, SeoR (talk) 10:01, 20 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

SeoR I can't help you on this but well done. Looks really good now. ww2censor (talk) 10:36, 20 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]
ww2censor Thanks! So long living near there but I still learned something, and that a couple of commonly-held beliefs about the island are wrong. Content work is the most fun of working on the encyclopedia. SeoR (talk) 14:39, 20 November 2021 (UTC)[reply]

There wasn't a Duke of York in 1803[edit]

The article says "one of three constructed in the Howth area, and 26 in northern County Dublin, on the instructions of the Duke of York" but as there wasn't a Duke of York in 1803 this seems unlikely. DuncanHill (talk) 05:07, 9 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, it was the Duke of York and Albany! DuncanHill (talk) 05:12, 9 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! That was what the source said, but it's good to be clear on the proper title / name. I see a number of edits have been made, possibly including on this, great! SeoR (talk) 17:04, 9 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
