Does anyone else think this is ridiculous? It should be peoples surely; otherwise we are all indigenous to the world94.172.109.114 (talk) 19:40, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

I think I understand what you mean. I am used to see both the reference to indigenous "peoples" and "people", in which case it can refer to all indigenous societies together (indigenous peoples) or as all the indigenous persons together who belong to indigenous socities (indigenous people). Both categories make sense on their own. But in this case I think i can see how being in reference to "world's" it can have the (only) interpretation you've just pointed out. We are all in fact indigenous to the world. Just like the Na'vi are indigenous to Pandora.. :)

Anyway, that is not for us to decide. In the end, it may be so that the United Nations have made a mistake, and we still have to write an article about what they call this day. In that case, I believe that sources generally point to the current name. Maziotis (talk) 20:12, 9 August 2011 (UTC)

I believe that your suggestion leaves no room for mistake, but that does not necessarily mean that the other version has just one possible interpretation. The world's indigenous people may not refer to those who are indigenous to the world, but being "indigenous" are still the indigenous people of all the world. It can be somewhat confusing and controversial, but believe me: the discussion and the implications of who are indigenous and who are aren't, and in what context, are very much in the mind of the individuals who deal with indigenous studies/issues.
