DYK Review[edit]

Hi, Ekem. Thanks for the review. You have made the following observations below my DYK nomination.

"Nice expansion. A couple of comments: I suggest to be consistent when discussing how long it took to built the dam,- in the intro it was built in 1985, and in the last section on construction delay it says "The Idamalayar Dam project was started in 1970 and completed after 17 years", while ref # 15 seems to suggest it took 9 years. Then, I had trouble getting to ref # 1 (possibly a temporary problem). The quotation "victim of recurring and long inertial periods of labour unrest" on page 7 of the document (ref # 15) actually refers to another dam, so consider to modify the hook."

Here are my clarifications.

The dam has two components, the main dam and the Hydropower component.

As regards the date, the first date in lead reference is related to the dam while the 1987 reference is to the completion of the 75 MW power component.

Since you have difficulty in opening Reference 1, I quote below the details as seen on my laptop.

“Fact file at reference 1 is a list of 36 projects owned by the Kerala State Electricity Board, which includes the Idamalayar Dam at serial 15 with following details: "Name of dam- Idamalayar, Year of completion - 1985, River basin -Idamalayar|Periyar; Type- Gravity Masonry; Height of dam above deepest foundation -102.8 m; Length of dam -373m; Reservoir area at FRL -28.3 m; Reservoir Gross Capacity -1089.9 MCM; Reservoir Effective capacity-1017.80 m; Designated Spillway Capacity -3012.80; and nearest town –Kothamangalam” It does not mention about the power component.

While the the dam was constructed and completed earlier in 1985, the power plant was commissioned in 1987.

In this context Reference 15 has the following texts on different pages, which has also been used for the hook.

Page 7 of reference pertains to the power plant which states:”Similarly, the next project, Idamalayar (of 75 MW, started way back in 1970 and commissioned in 1987), suffered a time over-run of about 9 years and a cost increase of 285 per cent.”

Page 27 of the the same reference states: “We would, however, like to recapitulate a recent experience of Idamalayar hydro-electric project, which unfortunately is yet to be commissioned (at the time this report is being got ready) because of unreasonable and irrational labour militancy. ……………"

On page 29 it is stated: “ Idamalayar project was one of the most unfortunate victims of recurring and long-inertial periods of labour unrest. Some stories, as told in the Report of the High Level Committee (1984) of Government of Kerala, are given in the box above.” I have used this text for the hook.

I hope that the above clarifies the issues raised by you. If you still feel that the hook text needs to be changed you may help me by suggesting a catchy formulation.--Nvvchar. 16:19, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I took the liberty to place the two dates of completions in the intro,- 1985 the dam, 1987 the power plant. The hook is fine with the extended ref to the other pages. All ok now.Ekem (talk) 22:20, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Ekam. Some times I do miss the obvious. Age perhaphs?--Nvvchar. 01:27, 3 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
