760XL[edit]

"Is" and RAM memory possible corrections[edit]

Is the Thinkpad 760XD actually currently being, "is also used on the International Space Station."? It may well be in a word processing manner, though, I really do not think so, and this is the last year of the International Space Station. This laptop is 17 years old!

There are technical specifications that say that the maximum RAM memory is 80 MB. This is in fact not according to IBM's manual on the 760 - http:/conradshome.com/thinkpad/760_userguide/index.htm, starting on page 376. The original manual says that 8 MB System Board + 32 MB Slot #1 + 64 MB Slot #2 = 104 MB Maximum memory. Also, if 8 MB + 32 MB + 32 MB, then that equals 72 MB, so the 80 MB is incorrect, unless the computer actually only reads 80 MB of the 104 MB. I think the actual max. is really 104 MB. *** There is a thing missing in the article. The 760XL, and the 760XD model have, according to the manual by IBM referenced by the article, a DIP Switch that allows more memory, see pg. 207 of the manual. If the DIP Switch is to the Left, those model Laptops can take Slot 1 32 MB, Slot 2 64 MB, for a total memory of 104 MB & displayed value 106,112 KB, though, a couple pages before it says that 8 MB is disabled if you use the DIP Switch Left option, it means 8 MB of the 16 MB is disabled to make the 104 MB total. If a person sells you a laptop w/ 56 MB, by scraping out the 64 MB to sell, you might pickup up 8 MB by changing the DIP Switch to the right...like I just did :) *** Mace I could get the machine up to when I added the 64/32 combo is 82 MB.

Can this computer be used today?
