Splitting proposal[edit]

The section about the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine is growing quite long: about half of the article's inline citations are currently in this one section. I wanted to propose splitting this off and creating an article titled Battle of Huliaipole (2022), although my main concern about doing so is that I have yet to see any sources specifically refer to this area of the conflict as a "battle". If anyone else can offer their thoughts, I would very much appreciate that. --Grnrchst (talk) 13:39, 16 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with your concerns with calling a new article Battle of Huliaipole (2022): a better title (at least for now) would be 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine in Huliaipole or Huliaipole in the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine – although neither of these is a good title.
What I would do if splitting would be to move/merge the content to its own section within either Southern Ukraine offensive (e.g. within a ===Huliaipole=== subsection within a ==Zaporizhzhia Oblast== section) or Russian occupation of Zaporizhzhia Oblast. The article Huliaipole could then use the {{Main}} or {{Further}} template.
That all said, I am not yet entirely convinced that there is currently a need to split this article: per WP:WHENSPLIT, the article is not yet long enough to require splitting. Moreover, I wouldn't focus too much on the number of inline citations: they are not as troublesome as excessive prose would be, and it makes sense that we have to rely on a large number of primary sources instead of a few secondary sources while the fight is ongoing. On the other hand, what might justify a split is that a lot of the content is not about Huliaipole itself, but the nearby area, so I wouldn't rule out a split either. —AlphaMikeOmega (talk) 00:49, 17 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah those titles would be a bit long and wonky. As for merging: I think in the case of the Southern Ukraine offensive it may end up being undue weight, as that article seems to be attempting a broad overview of the events, rather than focusing on any specific front; while in the case of the Russian occupation of Zaporizhzhia Oblast, it may not be accurate to include, as Huliaipole is currently in the area of Zaporizhzhia that is still held by Ukraine.
Thanks for clearing up the issue of when to split, I'll certainly keep an eye on when the prose begins to get excessive. At the very least, it might be worth holding a split off until the situation has developed further, as it has currently reached a bit of a stalemate. Grnrchst (talk) 07:57, 20 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Strong support for a split, however I am not sure if we could call this a battle as I think that most things that happened here were artillery strikes, although the Russians did try to take the town. I also agree that a split could be justified on the area nearby Huliaipole. I've seen this area being referred to as the "Zaporizhzhia contact line" and it also includes Orikhiv, Velyka Novosilka and Vuhledar (I didn't hear much about the latter). The aim of offensives in this direction would probably be taking over the city of Zaporizhzhia, so we could also use this to decide a title for such a potential article. Maybe just "Zaporizhzhia offensive". Super Ψ Dro 20:30, 20 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It would appear that @Baba Mica has just created the article Battle of Huliaipole using the text from this article. It might be worth going with this and taking discussion about the title to its respective talkpage. The text in this article will also need to be cut down and a link made to the new article.
