"Razed to the ground" is a bit over the top and implies total destruction to level ground. Most buildings had some damage and many were badly damaged but few were razed.

I should qualify this by saying it refers to to colonial buildings in the city. Many traditional builings in the bairros were burnt to the ground.

Gosh, airport named "Nova Lisboa"????? That was in colonial times, until 1975!--213.22.67.45 (talk) 16:42, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
