Section that is probably completely true BUT very misleading.[edit]

During two days in January 2018 when the wholesale spot price for electricity in South Australia rose due to hot weather, the battery made its owners an estimated A$1,000,000 (US$800,000) as they sold power from the battery to the grid for a price of around A$14,000/MWh.[31] Based on the first six months of operation, the reserve is estimated to earn about A$18 million per year.[32] (This is a third-party estimate, based on spot energy prices; it is possible that the HPR has contracted to provide power at a lower price, in exchange for a more certain income stream.)

Well, no doubt that is all very true. But the point is, that this battery was SUPPOSED to benefit South Oz's long suffering electricity consumers. "the cost of grid services to the Australian Energy Market Operator by 90% in its first 4 months" The two references are secondary sources, which don't link to the original article. I suspect the original article is not public. AEMO say that FCAS costs dropped 57%, but I think that's over the whole NEM. AER state of the energy market box 2.4. That AER report also points to a new requirement in SA for FCAS to be procured locally, which drove prices up, and was subsequently removed. (Section 2.9.7). SA FCAS prices are quite volatile, and tend to be driven by islanding. (See Figure 1.3 in State of the Energy Market 2023, which unfortunately doesn't cover the relevant period, but shows how outlier-driven these costs are.) So I'm sceptical of the causal link here. - User: Matthew
