Page created by moving history material from Latitude. See Talk:Latitude#Move History of latitude measurements to a new page. This new page requires work to add citations, pictures, and new topics on more modern techniques of measurement. Peter Mercator (talk) 13:51, 13 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Concerning the clarification for "This instrument could only be used in latitudes close to the horizon.", it seems from the Wikipedia page about the Arabian Kamal that it can only be used to measure the "height" of *stars* close to the horizon. Maybe this can then be changed to "This instrument could only be used in latitudes where Polaris stays close to the horizon.", although I'm not sure whether other stars could or could not be used. In that case, "This instrument could only be used to find the position of stars which are close to the horizon." would be more correct. Jahvascriptmaniac (talk) 16:49, 15 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
