Attack on trams in Grace O'Malley[edit]

I have heard there were frequent attacks on trams in the Grace O'Malley housing estate, by youths with sticks and stones, earning it the nickname of Korea. Could someone who knows more about this and has the sources in hand please add this in to the article. TMN81 (talk) 20:38, 3 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Two different stories may be confounded here. Marian Park public housing, near Grange Road in Baldoyle, was constructed in the early 1950s (and apparently so-named in honour of the Marian year). It earned the nickname Korea because it was so remote at the time. In contrast, Grace O'Malley Drive was built several decades earlier. The trams were already running at the time, and I suppose it's possible that they were used for target practice. However, the Korean war was well into the future, so the likelihood of the nickname being adopted seems improbable. I stand corrected. I've located a source that indicates Grace O'Malley Drive was indeed constructed in the early 1950s, and was nicknamed Korea at the time. This form of nicknaming is rather common in the area; it's not related to specific local incidents of violence. I'll eventually add some improvements to the History section (which currently opens with the tramway's closure and replacement!), along with additional references. jxm (talk) 00:36, 14 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
