Closure in 1977 and opening in 1981[edit]

I am a bit confused by Butt, as it identifies the station closing in 1977 and reopening on 5 October 1981. I do not recall it having closed. Does anyone have any further information on this. --Stewart (talk | edits) 18:57, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure, but off the top of my head it could have been connected to the construction and opening of the Argyle Line. Britmax (talk) 19:15, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Was not sure - however I am think it was open when I went through around 1980. On the other hand it does have a new building which I think dates from around then. --Stewart (talk | edits) 19:19, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The first four editions of Baker's Rail Atlas, dated June 1977, Oct 1978, Sept 1980 and July 1984, all show it as existing; furthermore it is also shown as served in the May 1979-May 1980 passenger timetable. —  Tivedshambo  (t/c) 19:38, 18 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

High Street (Glasgow) railway station → High Street railway station (Glasgow) – Per WP:UKSTATIONDAB, UK railway stations requiring disambiguation should use standard parenthetical disambiguation: Xxx railway station (Location) and mid-phrase disambiguation – i.e. Xxx (Location) railway station [has] been deprecated (mid-phrase parentheses may be used in some cases where it is demonstrably part of the WP:COMMONNAME).

Therefore, having (Glasgow) at the end is the best way to follow this guideline. However, I thought it best to make an RM instead of a unilateral move to get consensus in case this is controversial. Firstly, the current title has endured since the article's creation, so maybe there is a reason. There is no other National Rail station named just High Street (unlike e.g. Hope or Bramley which are genuinely duplicated), though disambiguation is necessary because it is within the names of stations at Clapham, Kensington, Shoreditch and Watford. What is the COMMONNAME for the Glasgow station? Do locals call it "High Street" or "High Street Glasgow"? I would suspect the former because there would be no danger of confusion with the others, which are all in London. So my suggestion is to follow the standard placement of parenthesis. Oppose per both above. It's also worth noting that the current guideline really ought to be reverted at some point given that mid-phrase disambiguation is the official name and/or official disambiguation in most cases of duplicate UK station names and so functions as the natural disambiguation project-wide naming conventions explicitly prefer over trailing parenthetical disambiguation where possible. Unfortunately it was changed, largely (but not exclusively) by editors more familiar with disambiguation than with UK railways who didn't appreciate that Wikipedia is not the only place that uses parenthetical disambiguation. Oppose and dump the guideline The guideline is self contradictory, i.e. "The official name of the station should normally be used with the appropriate suffix, except where this would be ambiguous." and "Following an October–December 2017 RfC, disambiguation for UK railway stations should follow a consistent format." - there is no doubt that this is the official name (and hence WP:COMMONNAME); and there's no doubt the guideline is bollocks (since it is self-contradictory), because there is an argument to be made that precision, unambiguity, and recognisability (by using the official name, which is what most people will know the station as, since this is how it appears in the vast majority of documents and sources) are more persuasive (especially when all together) than mere internal consistency, especially if UK station names are actually inconsistent: its not Wikipedia's job to create consistency ex nihilo where none exists, .
