Title of the article[edit]

Wikipedia policy is to use the most common English-language name. Sometimes there is doubt about what that is. In the case of Heraklion, there is not. I checked a variety of corpora, and they are quite consistent in the ranking, with Heraklion being by far the most common except in News, where Iraklion is most common. The current article title, Heraclion, is rare in all corpora.

So I am changing the article name back, and correcting the alternate spelling section. --Macrakis 17:07, 18 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

A discussion has began about the naming of this article and of Iraklion Archaeological Museum. There is a clear inconsistency here. Please express your opinion and make your propositions either here or in Talk:Iraklion Archaeological Museum. I'm not expert in transliterations. Hence, although I took a position in Talk:Iraklion Archaeological Museum, I cannot say that I'm definitely right.--Yannismarou 14:49, 18 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

El Greco's hometown[edit]

Herakleion is the alleged hometown of El Greco. Fodele also claims that it is his hometown.--Yannismarou 18:04, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Speculation[edit]

From the first line of the history section : "Though there is no archaeological evidence of it, Knossos may well have had a port at the site of Heraklion as long ago as 2000 BC." They might also have had jet packs and martians for pets, but without archaeological evidence it's a pretty meaningless statement. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.166.80.253 (talk) 13:43, 26 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Comments on the article[edit]

1. There is a huge time gap between 2000 B.C. and 824 in the "History" under the "Founding" subsection which is completely empty.

2. There is another gap between 1212 and 1645 between the Venetian and Ottoman eras.

3. One more gap is evident between 1669 and 1898 between the Ottoman and the modern eras.

4. From what I read on Wikipedia the 126th Combat Group of the Hellenic Air Force is no longer in service so the note in the "Airport" subsection is obsolete.

5. Simone Stratigo is not a native of the city of Heraklion so it should not be listed.

6. To the north of Heraklion is not Fira. Exomitis on Thera is the closest city to Heraklion.

7. I made a major improvement to the layout since images were scattered and sized randomly or unrelated to the text next to them.

Climate[edit]

I see a recent change of climate source from NOAA to another site... I'll look at that and see why the new data is so far off. Also I changed milder to warmer but might revisit that to change the first part of the sentence instead, and restore the original milder. Lollipop (talk) 14:13, 14 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

History: no mention of WW2 !?[edit]

Why is this? Surely the fighting when the Germans invaded has to be described? Boscaswell talk 03:54, 22 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thera/Santorini[edit]

In the History part of the article, under Minoan Era, it states that the port was destroyed by a volcanic tsunami from nearby Santorini. Now, that name wasn't coined until until the XIII century. It was known as Thera back in the ancient times. Wouldn't it make more sense to change the name from Santorini to Thera instead? Even now Santorini become more obscure name.
