Open Call for New Images and Historical Information[edit]

Hi all we've recently added some new material and updated some information to the page. While the result is a more informative article, it is also in dire need of many more and newer images. Would anyone be able to assist in this? We are particularly looking for images of the CDB and well known parts of the city like, Borrowdale, Westgate and Mount Pleasant. In addition pictures of notable venues like Harare Sports Club, Borrowdale Golf Course or any new developments in the city would be welcome. And finally if anyone has pictures of less well known but historically important areas such as Arcadia, Braeside, St Martins for their Coloured (mixed race) Zimbabwean history, or Eastlea, Milton Park and Avenues for their immigrant past and affordable housing, office development present etc. Please include them or add any information you have to the text. The history of small and off the beaten path cities like Harare often goes underreported and unappreciated and we hope you can help make this page better! Thank you! (11/19/2020)

Pronounciation[edit]

Anyone know how to pronounce this? Hah-rare? Hah-rah-reh?

  • It is in fact pronounced Huh - rah - reh (or for some its Huh - rah - ree). This is coming from somebody who grew up there so don't bother saying its wrong 'cause I think I should know that is isn't!
    • Found it in a geography textbook, adding it... --Patik 00:07, 29 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
      • Being born and growing up there for 6 years I believe it is Huh - Raa - ree and don't say I am wrong...SaiyanEmperor2008 (talk) 16:53, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
        • Huh - rah - reh is the pronunciation used by native (and many Sn-2) Shona speakers. Since Harare is a Shona word, that is the correct pronunciation. It is also the pronunciation used in television and radio advertisements by the Harare City Council, and in official (verbal) statements made by its senior officers. I believe that qualifies Huh - rah - reh as (pronunciation-wise) the self-identifying term for the entity involved. Huh - Raa - ree, whilst widely used by white Zimbabweans is neither official, linguistically correct or the most widespread pronunciation. Babakathy (talk) 17:43, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Just to support babakathy, Harare is a Shona word (albeit a bit corrupted) therefore cannot be pronounced as Harari. I do not mean to disrespect anybody who has stayed there 6 years, 20 years or their whole life but the facts are those who do not speak the local languages, Shona and Ndebele, will corrupt and mispronounce many names for example, Whites, Indians and non native speakers will say Mutari instead of Mu-ta-reh,hey will also say Mas- vingo instead of Ma-svi-ngo (the svi is a whistle sound found in Shona) Please let us respect the name of this city. The argument here is equivalent to the pronunciation of the city of Paris. We all know it is Pari in French and that is the official pronouciation. Let wikipedia provide official and correct information. 'Huh - Raa - ree, whilst widely used by white and Indian Zimbabweans is neither official, linguistically correct and should therefore not be featured as it is a corruption of the name. Malindi —Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.97.222.210 (talk) 20:55, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The issue is that the pronunciation needs to be conform to WP:IPAE, I don't have any opinion as to what the correct pronunciation should be, just that it needs to be in the proper format. --Leivick (talk) 21:27, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Daniel Leivick, thank you for the pointer. Can you please help me. Would Hə’rarɛ conform? I'm just checking before I change it. Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.28.253.150 (talk) 23:10, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I went ahead and looked up the pronunciation and IPA notation from Websters. It corresponds more or less with what Babakathy said and is very close to what you suggested: \hə-ˈrä-rā\. --Leivick (talk) 00:11, 7 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Via bbc,[edit]

this morning, I heard Harare Declaration, referencing Fiji {& Zimbabwe & not Salisbury}.

Is there any technology to help us to disambiguate the spellings of Harare | Hariri? Almost as bad is "Tripoli"; however, that solution is somewhat simpler, as there are not nearly as many misspellings.

Thank You.

[[ hopiakuta 03:03, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No need to worry, Harare is the only correct spelling, Hariri is something else completely and Harari is simply wrong--AssegaiAli 13:23, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

redirects[edit]

Perspicacite, I have tried discussing the redirect issue we seem to be having, on your talk page, but your constant deletion of my requests for us to discuss this, is making it a little hard to deal with. I hope we can deal with this here, or feel free to contact me on my talk page. I feel that as Harare is the used name, and Salisbury is no longer used, that the redirect should go to Salisbury, UK. comments such as 'harare is important, salisbury uk is not' do not help this process.Sennen goroshi 17:47, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You have repeatedly posted angry rants that, on average, violate three to five policies on etiquette. You have not presented a serious argument. When you do, I'll listen, assuming it contains a minimal number of threats and expletives. Perspicacite 19:21, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Salisbury in the UK is a large, important, historic city that goes by that name today. There is no question but Salisbury redirect should point to that city, and not to the now renamed capital of Harare. Wizzy 07:20, 21 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Perspicacite, Im sorry if you considered my messages to contain threats and expletives, perhaps you were offended by my use of the word arrogant, I'm sorry if that was the case, but in all honesty, I thought you comments regarding Salisbury, UK, did seem rather arrogant, as did the removal off all comments on your talk page, without bothering to respond, but with a slightly snide/arrogant/rude comment in the edit summary.

I think it is only fair that I put the comments between both of us on this page, as you have decided that this page is the best place to accuse me of wikipedia violations, anger, threats and use of expletives, then perhaps it is also the best place for me to address those points.

My initial post on your talk page was as follows:

Please don't change the redirect again. I'm sure for someone who lives in Harare, the old name is important, however it is afterall the old name, and while the city has a new name, there is a Salisbury in England, and it is still Salisbury, and has been for 100s of years, the redirect should go to the city currently using the name. Also if you look online you will find there are far more references to Salisbury UK, than for Salisbury ZimbabweSennen goroshi 16:37, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

and you deleted it, with the following comment

rv to Jogers, the last time someone left an intelligent message on my talkpage.

I'm sorry if I'm being picky, but that seemed a little rude to me.

I followed that comment with

Please do not be so arrogant, as to remove all comments that you do not agree with If you have any issues with the comment I made, you could have replied on my talk page, instead of RVing and making snide remarks. With comments such as yours, are you still in wonder as to why you do not become an admin? Some manners, replying instead of deleting and you might find wikipedia to be a more friendly and rewarding place.

and

if you wish to discuss the Harare/Salisbury redirect issue, please contact me on my talk page, or the Harare discussion page.Sennen goroshi 17:48, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

in addition to this, your edit summaries were as follows

18:15, 17 September 2007 Perspicacite (Talk | contribs) (20 bytes) (The capital of Zimbabwe is a lot more important than some city in England.)

16:22, 20 September 2007 Perspicacite (Talk | contribs) (20 bytes) (Harare is important. Salisbury-UK is not.)

18:07, 20 September 2007 Perspicacite (Talk | contribs) (20 bytes) (You posted an insulting rant on my talkpage and then you ask me to discuss this... as though there is something to discuss.)

19:10, 20 September 2007 Perspicacite (Talk | contribs) (20 bytes) (The capital of Zimbabwe is more important than the average UK city.)

I think the above comments of yours, are more than enough to justify my comments regarding arrogance.

I'm still a little confused regarding your use of the words expletive and threats, would you be kind enough to point out what expletives and/or threats I have used on your talk page, please?

And finally, please don't revert the redirect from Salisbury, UK to Harare, a capital city of course if more notable than a normal city, however Harare is now called Harare, not Salisbury - and without trying to insult the history of Harare/Salisbury, I don't consider its former name to be so important.

thanks for your time in reading this Sennen goroshi 09:04, 21 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

name of city, metro area[edit]

When I was in Harare people would call Borrowdale, Marlborough, etc, suburbs, but I don't think anyone thought of the University as being 5 km north of the city, but rather in (Mount Pleasant in) Harare. I would defer, though, to natives. 128.100.110.82 (talk) 19:13, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Borrowdale, Mt Pleasant, Malborough, etc, are all in Harare and administered by the City Council of Harare . They are regarded as suburbs simply because they are not in downtown Harare.

Move to Salisbury[edit]

Can I suggest return this article to Salisbury (Zimbabwe) as that was the true name for the city before Mugabi illegally seized power in 1980. Here on Wikipedia we have the responcibility to observe international law and recognize legal constitutions only and not plain de-facto statuses like this one. We can say, since being sezied by Mugabi's rebels it changed it's name to Harare. Human Rights Believer (talk) 14:00, 29 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I believe in democracy so I will obtain a concensus.

  • Support. For reasons above.
  • Support Mugabi is a dictator and his word should not dictate Wikipedia. 62.189.57.130 (talk) 14:03, 29 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strongly oppose. Your statements are inaccurate: irrespective of what you thing of Mugabe, he came to power as a result of an internationally negotiated settlement and elections. The government formed as a result of that election is the one which renamed Salisbury to Harare in 1982. His government have had diplomatic recognition from 1980 to the present. Harare is the legal, official and recognised name so it stays the title of the article. Babakathy (talk) 16:49, 29 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't take too much notice of the above proposal. The user has been banned indefinitely (a second time) and the IP is most probably the same person; it arrived three minutes after the section was added, and what are the chances of two users spelling the Presdient's name Mugabi? This section needs to be cancelled. Evlekis (talk) 18:26, 30 January 2010 (UTC

Salisbury dos not exist anymore ; you cannot rewrite history. You are requesting to restore the former name only because you want to expose a position that wants to be identetified as being white protestant and british. You have England for that, why do you need Africa ? I don't know if Mugabe won (he was not alone though) wether because he was blessed or because life is unfair (which is a nice idea from the point of view of calvinist cynicism) but this is a fact. You are just racist a cannot accept defeat. Only God is to blame I gess. As Confucius would say : "you understand things, then the world is as it is ; you do not understand things, then the world is as it is".
