Hampe and Vijayanagara

The modern and ancient village of Hampe is being confused in Wikipedia with the ruined city of Vijayanagara. Much of the content of this article belongs over in Vijayanagara. Imc 11:36, 4 February 2006 (UTC)

please Merge Hampi and Vijayanagara

Why have too pages for the same location. please merge these pages.

Dinesh Kannambadi

They are not the same place, except to tourists. Hampi is only a village, near the original center of Vijayanagara. The ruins of Vijayanagara are a much bigger area, including at least both Hampi and Kamalapuram, let alone other nearby places such as Anegondi, and perhaps Hospet. Imc 16:56, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Directions request

Hi, can someone add directions on 'How to get there'? That would be a good addition to this page. I've been there but that was years ago as a child. wildT 08:15, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

Some images in gallery are without caption

Can someone add the captions (other than trivial ones like 'Hampi' or 'Hampi temple')? Thanks. GDibyendu (talk) 07:21, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

Telugu is spoken in HAMPI

Hampi which is situated on the banks of the Tungabhadra River where It is 353km away from Bangalore, 254km from Bijapur and 74km away from Bellary. Hosapete, 13km away, is the nearest taluka headquarters. The main languages spoken there are Kannada and Telugu. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 60.53.49.132 (talk) 19:14, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

ThungaBhadra was Pampa ?

Pampa river flows through Kerala. See Pampa River. The famous Sabarimala pilgrim center is also located on the shores of river Pampa. The name 'Sabari mala' is associated with the woman sage Shabari mentioned in Ramayan. While the place and the river exists in the same name as mentioned in Ramayan exists, the hypothesis that ThungaBhadra was Pampa and that the name Hampi derives from Pampa looks like too much of cutting the foot for the shoes.

Is there any reference, scripture that calls ThungaBhadra as Pampa? --122.166.11.227 (talk) 16:35, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

Adding Video Content

I would like to add video footage of the following landmarks around Hampi. This video was taken as part of a documentary produced by the Global Lives Project:

sunrise point Hampi Bazaar

I would subclip the video down to about one minute. Jordanhkatz (talk) 20:31, 8 June 2012 (UTC)

Reworking of Article

I believe the article needs lot of re-work and will be doing it, please also contribute and discuss here before to avoid edit wars . Shrikanthv (talk) 12:20, 15 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi Shrikant, I've reworked the article & restructured it into a more logical flow. Have also added citations & credible content in the Etymology & History sections, which were earlier written in a personal essay style. Am now working on the various sites & buildings in the historical zone. Am looking to add a clickable map here. Some help on that would be very useful. -Ambar (talk) 19:05, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

Is Hampi the anglicised version of Hampe?

Give proper references to this statement. Hampi is a name of a village in northern Karnataka. People in the region do not use Kannada words as they are used in southern Karnataka (eg: northern Karnataka: eli, southern Karnataka: ele, English : leaf). Hampi has been pronounced as hum-pee from ages. Please don't make it a southern version. Krishnakulkarni36 (talk) 13:10, 21 June 2016 (UTC)

Is the information under 'History' genuine?

The story of Gayathri Giri, Premla Tapoonia etc (under section 'History') seems to be fabricated. None of the books/websites about the history of Karnataka that I have referred till date talk about any of these people.

Are their any credible sources for this? If not, can the two paragraphs ("Kampili was said to have been founded by ... the king of Humanavarnam") be deleted from this article? Thanks in advance. Srimysore (talk) 09:10, 18 January 2017 (UTC)

Merge and redirect proposal

Hampi is notable only as the core settlement of ancient and modern Vijayanagara. A separate article on Hampi can offer readers nothing that's not already better covered and contextualised (in greater detail, and with better sources) at the latter, and more generally at Vijayanagara Empire. This article should be merged with Vijayanagara, and "Hampi" should be a redirect to the same. Haploidavey (talk) 11:02, 21 March 2017 (UTC)

OR, CFORK and other issues

This version of the article is in weak shape. It happens to be our main article on the world heritage site called the Group of Monuments at Hampi. There is a general lack of scholarly and other RS. Sections are based on travel blogs such as those on Trayaan.com, and other undue/unbalanced summary. To compound the issues there is WP:CFORK problems with the Vijayanagara article... which is in equally poor shape. Dedicated wikipedia articles on Achyutaraya Temple (also known as Tiruvengalanatha Temple), and many others listed by UNESCO, don't exist. This article mentions it and others but as a mere list in the passing. The article needs rework. Some suggestions:

  • Create a dedicated article on Hampi (town), citing RS. The town is more than the Group of Monuments at Hampi. We can move current population, its zip code, climate etc into it.
  • Clean up OR and other issues in this article. Replace unsourced and questionable source-based content with high quality scholarship / RS. Nothing in this article should be unsourced. There is much peer reviewed scholarship on the Group of Monuments at Hampi.
  • Trim out CFORK issues in the Vijayanagara article, leaving a SUMMARY-STYLE of Group of Monuments at Hampi from this article and add in SUMMARY-STYLE of monuments in Kamalapura, Nimbapura, Anegundi, etc that were originally a part of the historic Vijayanagara.

@Yamaguchi先生:, @IM3847:, @Haploidavey:, @Others: Would this restructuring work? Comments and suggestions? Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 18:25, 9 October 2017 (UTC)

@Ms Sarah Welch: I do think Hampi and Group of Monuments at Hampi deserves seperate articles, since Hampi is home for many Temples and monuments, it would be confusing if everything is present on same article.—IM3847 (talk) 02:02, 10 October 2017 (UTC)
@Ms Sarah Welch:, please go ahead -- if the modern village of Hampi (presumably very small but significant) is notable enough for its own article, disentangling it from the Group of Monuments at Hampi makes sense. I've always found the article as it stands, and the repetitions shared between related articles quite confusing -- and some of my confusion arises because the overall topology is not made clear in the article (the map is very faint).
I'll watch progress here and perhaps will learn something. It's all rather outside my usual editing area but if I find I can make useful contributions, I will Haploidavey (talk) 18:25, 11 October 2017 (UTC)
Having said that, I'd been assuming the size and significance of the modern village based on a map created over a century ago. Duh... Haploidavey (talk) 18:56, 11 October 2017 (UTC)

Comments

This is a fine and very well-cited article, and I shall have few comments to make - it's basically ready for GA.

  • Why not link Ashoka in lead.
  • Done. - MSW
  • Link Shiva, Durga, Krishna, Pampa, Ramachandra, linga at first instance in body.
  • Indeed. Linked the first instance in the main text (not captions or with cites). - MSW
  • Link Gopuram, Ganesha, Narasimha, Vitthala at first instance in captions.
  • Done. - MSW
  • Article repeatedly says it's on the banks of the Tungabhadra River.
  • Fixed. In some instances, it is a temple that is on the banks which seems appropriate given other temples are not. - MSW
  • Might be best to choose either Gopuram or Gopura as the spelling throughout.
  • Done. Gopura -> Gopuram, since we linked the latter. - MSW
  • Guess Kathleen Morrison and Carla Sinopoli are archaeologists - better say so.
  • Yes. Done. - MSW
  • Similarly, say Will Durant was a historian.
  • Done. - MSW
  • I think you should briefly mention and cite the Hampi Hippie connection. It is part of the history.
  • Checking into RS. - MSW
  • was checking RS but should this toppic be relevant to Hampi (town) and not the actual collection of monuments protected by UNESCO ? Shrikanthv (talk) 12:42, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
To an extent that's your call - it could be a footnote with a link to the other article, but the popularity with visitors of all types is surely directly linked to the archaeological site with its religious artefacts. Indeed, it would be advisable to say something about tourism to the site. Chiswick Chap (talk) 13:56, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
  • I added this with source to the Hampi (town) article. I will add a note here, as that seems like the better balance given Shrikanthv's spot on comment. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 14:24, 1 December 2017 (UTC)
Good. Chiswick Chap (talk) 15:58, 1 December 2017 (UTC)

Summary

This is a splendid article, well up to the required standard, and I am happy to award it GA status now. I hope very much that the nominators will review some of the many articles currently languishing in the GA queue to encourage other editors. If you are thinking to take this article further to FAC, I would guess you have a good chance, and can only suggest paying careful attention to polishing the text and especially the references.
