The Most Beautiful Garden in Sweden in 2003.[edit]

Somebody wonders by whom Gothenburg Botanical Garden was named The Most Beautiful Garden in Sweden in 2003 (and so did I). On this page it is told, in Swedish, that:

"Top Ten Lawns" - in Sweden called "Sveriges vackraste park" (Sweden's most beautiful park) is an initiative by Briggs & Stratton, the largest manufacturer of petrol-driven gardening machines in the world. The aim of the contest has been to name the most beautiful public parks and gardens in different countries. The contest started in USA, where it has been going for six years, and started last year in Europe. Now the winners have been named in Germany, Sweden, Italy, France and UK.

On April 29 a five member jury chose the ten most beautiful parks in Sweden. 39 parks had entered the contest. The Jury was Katarina Dunér, author and TV-producer in the gardening area, Lars Krantz, gardener, Jörgen Orback, landscape architect and president of the Gartner-fund [a support-organisation for gardeners], Nils Wetterlind. responsible for Briggs & Stratton Sweden and Markus Fisher from Infomedia, the PR-agency responsible for the project.
A list over the ten most beautiful parks was made. During the summer the public could vote for its favourite park among those on www.sverigesvackrastepark.nu. [dead domain] Almost 12000 votes were cast of which 3500 went to Carl Johan's Park in Norrköping, that won a special prize as the public favourite. Regardless of this the jury chose the Gothenburg Botanical Garden.

There is a page on www.sverigesvackrastepark.se that may or may not be the page in question. It says that the contest has been held annually 2003-2009 and lists the winners and has a vote going between the seven winners (99 voters so far - Gothenburg Botanical Garden is second with 17 votes!).
The german site is defunct, the french site is now something in Japanese. The italian site can be found here (held 2003-2012). In Britain the competition has been held 2003-2009 according to a Google search. The prize seems to have been equipment for about £3000.
To me it seems like a PR-stunt, not worth mentioning.
